Test Ride this weekend! Here's my set up!
cfdb45d9-f360-879b.jpg

Took her for a ride all loaded up today and its solid! Didn't budge a bit, also don't notice much of a difference in handling, take off is a bit slower but cornering felt the same.
Tested reserve while fully loaded and got 38km (didn't go all the way till it died because I had to go somewhere) I thought that was pretty good.

Looks pretty good. When you go on the real ride - just take a break after the first 1/2 hour and recheck how well it's on - that will give you a bit of a safety margin. Go over your list make sure nothing overlooked - 1/2 hour you can still loop back. ( stuff like camera battery chargers easy to forget and nasty ).

Even better having a buddy ride behind you for a bit and make sure all is well.

What's all your views on keeping the Jerry can on the back,

I would like to have it just in case I run out of gas. Say, miss a gas station, loose track of KMs/ Reserve, etc.

the reason I ask is my family is concerned with me taking it, due to the obvious danger of explosion in case of serious wreck.

Cheers, Geoff

There was an OP who did a trip to Cali early last year Follow Along: 600rr to California ... he even got in a small accident (run off the road) and nothing happened to the Jerry can. Personally, I'd much rather have extra gas then be stuck in the middle of nowhere without any.

Just my 2 cents. Cheers

Thanks, I have read Wheelieboys thread, that is where I got the idea for the Jerry can. and I feel the same way about not getting stuck in the middle of no where lol

There is no explosion risk if in a certified container - a 2 litre should do it. Gasoline is only explosive when there is vapour and lets face it you are wrapped around a big chunk of gasoline ;)

Touratech makes some specifically for mcycles.

You do want ventilation for sure as the temperature changes may vent some vapour.

But you could always carry a siphon too.

I carried 10 ltr can on the passenger seat going up The James Bay road but we knew we had to have gas as it was 380 km between stations.
I just put in a spare buddy seat bag. But two litres like shown above should be fine.

Nice set up. When I went into the states I just had a small gym bag filled with my stuff. It was bungee'd into my pillion seat by 2 bungee cords, and also used one of those straps for holding vehicles in place (forget the name)

As for the gas. What I did was waited until I hit about 250km on the trip odo and then look for the nearest gas station. (It seems I can get 4-500 out of a tank easily touring, so once I hit half a tank) Then I'd fill up. Reason I did this is because sometimes when I got off at an exit, either the sign was old and the gas station wasn't there. Or the gas station wasn't open 24/7 (no problem for you. but I made the stupid mistake of driving ONLY at night. But I will admit, the empty interstate/highway roads made for lots of fun...) Meaning I'd have to trek until then exit.

Also if you crash bad enough for a gas can to explode, the burning gas can would be the least of your worries.

The only real problem I had was that after 10 hours on the bike, my thighs and butt hurt like hell.

All Packed up and ready to go for the "test ride" tomorrow, leaving at 8:30, Camping, and be back home tomorrow evening. This should test my endurance on my bike, and see if I can handle a month on the R6. Ill post when I get back and tell you all how it went.
Have a good weekend everyone and Happy Mothers Day to all the mothers out there.
Cheers,
Geoff

Where are you heading? Looks like you caught good weather - it was great tonight - 200 k up around the Forks - bit chilly at the end.

Going around Georgian Bay, camping in the Manitoulin Islands and taking the Tobermory ferry across in the morning then heading home. Yes the weather definitely look good.. Which is awesome!

Good luck have fun - sure looks nice out - hope to get out as well. Damn only 8 degrees - bundle up.

8 hours later - damn what a warm day - I'm cookin'.....

Test ride went well! I now know my body can handle long distance on the R6 (and sleeping on the ground in a tent).
TOTim and I started our test on Saturday around 9:00 at 400 & Major Mac. went up the 400 towards Sudbury - Got rained on for about an hour (Tour Master Sentinel Rain Suit kept me dry) stopped in sudbury around 13:30 for lunch at Swiss Chalet

then carried on along Trans Canada West, then took hwy6 down on to the island and got to "Mac's Camp" around 18:00. I got home around 18:15.
Millage on my GPS shows, 1000.1KM and 11hrs moving

I would try to stay near the border with the US after vancouver then going up to banff.

like vancouver to hope to osoyoos.

That is if you don't change your mind and start by heading to Whistler from vancouver. Apparently 99 is a must.

Definitely a thought thanks. That will most likely be decided before I leave Vancouver. I will probably be doing a lot of riding while there. I have been intouch with a few ppl on bcsportbikes.com to do some riding/meets while I am there. So I will be getting some local insight.

Cheers,
Geoff
