Thoughts about Yamaha TW200.

I am thinking about buying one.
I have 2 other bikes, but close to home is mostly gravel roads.
I may want to explore some logging roads & unimproved road allowance in the area.
Not wanting anything flashy, just basic A to B ride.
Anyone have one? Thoughts, suggestions, would you buy another?

Pretty much ideal for what you want it for. Not quick but torquey enough for that stuff and reliable as a brick. Plus not overly heavy.

Don't be shy about buying a used one. I think the only changes that Yamaha has made to it since 1987 is adding a disc brake and deleting the kickstart in 2001

I had a TW200 for a long time, they are in a category called ‘farm bike’.

They are a hoot. I could run 100kmh all day, a burst to 120 on level ground. The seat is lower and wider than a dirt bike which gives a little more comfort.

It’s not made for pounding single tracks, but anywhere else it’s happy.

If you’re not planning to use freeways, you can travel all day on highways at 100kmh. I used to ride regularly between Markham and my old cottage in Sharbot lake, 2.5 hours.

Dependable, easy to ride, only 275lbs….

Another great thing is they hold their value. Ride and maintain it for 10 years and you’ll probably get your money back.

I put 16,000km on an '03 tw200.

It was an ex motorcyclecourse bike.

Stock exhaust pipes can rot out at the lower part of the can. Check potential purchases.

Stone axe reliable.

Pretty sure bridgestone is the only tire manufacturer that makes tires for a tw.

My brother had one as a first bike. I didn't want to leave him for dead everywhere, so I got one too.

We took them through some ****, for sure.

Think of it as a two wheel quad. Great trail bike with light clutch. Very easy to ride. Easy to maintain. It was one of my first bikes and loved it. Floated on sand and loose stuff well. It was essentially the mule of any trail riding we did.

How much are they now? If price was close, I'd much rather have something like a drz400.
2024 Yamaha TW200 > $7,004.87 >> 278lbs >>> 16 hp
2024 Suzuki DRZ400 > $8,999.00 >> 321lbs >>> 33.4hp
Or an xt250/xt225, or the Kawasaki Sherpa 250 given the intended use.
2024 Yamaha XT250 >$7,456.87 >> 291lbs >>> 18hp
Kawasaki Sherpa 250 not made since 2002

Thanks for your input. Looking to buy new.
While the XT250 is close, and the Suzuki DRZ400 is tempting, I'm liking the funky look of the TW200.
Still a couple weeks to decide, but thinking the TW200.

I personally would not consider a new tw200. Giant tax and depreciation kick in the nuts and no different than the entire fleet available used. Not my money though so if you buy new, you can have the shiniest tw around.

Thing is a TW will normally hold their value if maintained. Most 10 year old TWs that are well maintained will fetch their original sticker price. my 89 was $3000 new, I sold it with 45k on the clock in 2015 for $3000, and it wasn’t perfect.

Check Kijiji, those little bikes keep the same price their whole life!

$3000 makes sense. I'd be shocked if second hand tw's were getting 7000+.

Note the good looking 750F in the background.....

That Facebook post above is kind of what I mean about holding their value. The one in the listing is $3500 and 24 years old. It would have been $3000 OTD new.

Also, the TW200 is the only motorcycle that has been ridden to both the North and South Poles... It's also been seen at the summit of Mt Kilimanjaro and Fuji and has the record for the highest elevation reached by motorcycle, about +19,000' on the slopes of Kilimanjaro and Everest. if you're thinking of a good adventure trip or even just a little winter riding...

Seems there isn't alot of used tw200 on the market.

I'd argue that an older xt225 would be a better choice.

Full size wheels, so you'd have a wide selection of dual sport tires.

Seat height is low.

Pretty sure the older xt225 are a bit lighter than the xt250 that replaced it.

I'd lowball to $2500, and see what he says.

Lots of life left in this bike, for minimal cost.

Engine is nearly identical to the tw200, minus the bump in displacement.
