Shipping Rates from the US - Online Parts

The bags in question were not metal but were the old style plastic BMW bags, so the weight was only about 5 pounds for both.
They were shipped at the lowest rate USPS offers, so it took several weeks for them to arrive.
It was last winter, so I was in no rush.
Yes, if its a part you need urgently then you will want to rush it, but there are other options.

I'm looking to order 5 wheels (rims only) for my Jeep from Discount Tire. They only ship UPS, fee is $250USD ($50/wheel fixed rate) that includes tax, duty and brokerage. If I shipped it to the border, which is free, by the time I pay tax, duty (6%?), $5 per wheel for storage plus fuel and time to get to the border I wouldn't be saving any money. Hate paying so much in shipping, esp to UPS, but sometimes you just have to eat the shipping to get exactly what you want.

At least they're including the brokerage in the shipping fees (UPS Sucks, did I mention that?), but with the purchase price, shipping, and then exchange on top of it all...are you saving anything on the purchase anymore vs buying locally?

Unfortunately the wheels aren't available locally, they are sold exclusively through Discount Tire as it is their house brand, Level 8.

Ship to someone that lives in the US and have them bring it up.

Or maybe everyone doesn't have a father in law in that lives in a tax free state and comes back to Canada every 2 weeks or so. ;)

I have ever paid duty on car parts, regardless of where they were manufactured. I have only ever paid 13% HST.

$250USD = $345CAD. How much are the wheels? What would HST be?

There is definitely an opportunity for someone in the GTA to do cheap shipping from the US, but you'd then have to worry about Customs and the FX rates.

So you can see why there is cheap shipping through the continental US, but not to here.

No one wants to take a huge risk for a meagre profit, and then be seen by some as a villain, gouging them on prices.

I'm pretty sure that car parts, regardless of country of origin, are covered under the free trade agreement...so you pay HST but no duty on the value.

My experience is that for smaller ticket items ($50 or less) the CBSA doesn't even bother with assessing duty anymore. Perhaps more effort than it's worth?

I think that would only be made in the USA or Mexico which are covered by NAFTA.
Open to correction.

I have never paid more than HST on any car or motorcycle parts. Including parts made in Europe, Asia and NA.

Wheels are $1045USD (~$1448CAD), so HST would be about $188CAD. Off hand, what's the most you've claimed at the border on car parts at one time?

This is what I understood, if they were made in the USA, they are duty exempt, Europe/Asia made = duty applies. Whether or not they're sticklers about it, I have no experience. Wheels I'm buying are made in China, sold in USA only.

Shipped to my door = $1794CAD
Shipped to border, plus tax, plus CBI fee, no duty = $1660CAD

Also factor in bridge tolls and gas. You'll save less than $100 by getting them shipped to CBI. Is that worth it?

I have claimed up to $1000USD several times and like I said I have never paid any duty. In dozens and dozens of trips to pick up car or bike parts I have never paid duty and I have never even been asked where the parts were from. Only HST.

I have never paid duty and I don't know anyhow else who has ever paid duty.

I don't think it's worth it to just get the wheels. If I have to go across border anyhow to pick up addition parts, it might be worth it.

Where do you get your parts shipped to? What service do you use?

I live in London so I go to SCC Parcel Pickup in Port Huron, MI.

Just ordered some brake pads and shipped to Crossborderpickups.

Want to see whether they really are shady or not. Spelling on their website sucks but registration process was easy and fees are low.

Worse come to worse I'm out 15 bucks US. Can't believe got 6 brake pads for $15 btw. A local shop would charge me 10 times that for same quality.

Have used Crossborderpickups about a dozen times now, I take back what I said earlier. Nothing shady, I think they're just running a shoestring operation. 100% satisfied with their service.

Where'd you order them from? I need a set of pads and shoes for my wifes bike before I go to get it certified in the spring, available all over eBay for about $10 for the pads and $15 for the shoes, with free shipping...and I'm pretty confident they'll end up in my mailbox with no duties if I just get them shipped regular mail.

For such a small purchase, how do you figure you're saving anything in this situation - was the seller gouging for Canadian shipping while offering dirt cheap/free US Shipping?

Profit margin probably low so need to cut out all the fanciness and luxury. Good to know!
I live in Mississauga so this is perfect for me. If only our dollar could take a viagra pill or something.

Brake pads for SS bikes are quite expensive. You can easily spend $50 a pair of quality ones.
Need 3 pairs a bike. That is almost $200 for top end tax in. Mid range would still be way over $100. Low end Chinese probably around $60-80 shipped.
Ones I bought are 75% off - hence $15. Shipping is free to US, non-existent to Canada.
D2Moto is the company. I ordered a chain from them long time ago for a great price but soon after they stopped shipping across the border.

I mainly needed rear pads but for that price I'm willing to give the fronts a try. Even if they only last one season, I'm ahead. And pads are not difficult to swap out.
I also wanted to try out the middleman company with a low price item first before I go all crazy and buy half the States.

Interesting, thanks. Looks like they have a great price on the shoes and pad set for my wife's bike, but pretty much on par with ordering Chinese (good enough for a 250) and having them shipped direct.
