Min wage increase

A good farrier with a regular clientelle can make very, very good money, especially one who can forge specialty shoes.

So don't be so quick to discount certain jobs just because you don't understand them.

I don't know where you got that quote from but it's not mine.

Liberals right now.

I get a chuckle out of bumper sticker philosophers making short sighted comments. Thatcher's "Problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other peoples money to spend." is cute but doesn't tell the whole story.

My pet one is socialism means taking money from people who have proved they can handle it and giving it to people that have proved they can't. Cute but not the whole story.

Cute sayings assume that everyone has the same drive and ability. Not everyone grew up in supportive surroundings. Not everyone is a capitalist. Not everyone wants granite counter tops or Starbucks coffee. Everyone needs food and shelter.

Some people are very content with a minimalist lifestyle. A modest roof over their heads and food on the table. Why waste the resources of a university if you don't care if you make six figures or not. These people are easy on the environment compared to the childless couple in the 5000 square foot house.

The fairness of the wage system is too complex to be clarified by a posting on a bumper sticker.

Leaving aside the Wynn opportunism, I think business models need to change. No one likes change but many low wage jobs are not just McJobs anymore, they are survival jobs for quite a few people and the wage hike goes some way towards recognizing that. As consumers we will pay a little more and business owners may need to accept a little lower profits. Any business owner that thinks they can pass on all the cost to the consumer may well end up learning about market forces again when someone undercuts him by providing the same product and accepting lower profits.

But who is willing to pay $5 for a coffee?

Venezuela has again increased it's minimum wage.

I think we need America to do a cultural enrichment & spread democracy & Capitalism to that country

Alberta increased its minimum wage too...the world didn’t end. Australia too...the world didn’t end. As for paying $5 for a coffee....you need your bumps feeling if anyone does that. At a certain point consumers will say no....then the businesses have a choice....accept less profit or close.

@nobbie48 , lots of folks that went to university would be really happy to land a six figure job.

You probably didn't read the article. It wasn't about who raised their minimum wage but about how frequently or by what percentage.

Indeed. It doesn't help that the richest one percent owns more than half the world's wealth. It's not surprising that a good deal of people at the bottom are looking for ways to elbow into some of that wealth. We should be happy they're essentially asking their governments to help them because the alternative, doing so through revolution where the gated communities of the wealthy are stormed, where the rich lose their heads or swing from bridges on piano wire garrotes is not particularly palatable.

What bothers me is the few elites in government who tax to death the working class. Confiscates guns from law abiding citizens while they live in luxury in their gated communities with armed guards.

Who’s confiscating guns?

In all things the first sign of death is to stop growing. It's bad news if profits are down. Profits are down means they still made money but the value of the business has decreased. That is unacceptable in the present climate.

I don’t think this will stop growth....growth may not be as much though. Owners may have to revise what acceptable profits are and adapt.

What are you talking about? What does guns have to do with this discussion?
It has to do with how everything government does is bad.

Just as in this thread it's government's fault if workers are given the opportunity to actually survive on their own labor, so too is it government's fault that we're not a gun-crazed homicidal nation like the good ol' USA. Unless of course they direct their beneficience directly at ME, in which case they're good.

Back in 2014 Tim Hortons increased the price of drinks and food. A November 2014 story from CTV:

"TORONTO -- Your morning stop at Tim Hortons is about to get a bit more expensive. The restaurant chain says it plans to raise prices for both coffee and breakfast sandwiches at its Canadian locations starting next Wednesday.
A cup of coffee will go up by 10 cents, on average, though the change will vary by region, and the price of a breakfast sandwich will also rise in all provinces except Ontario.
"We have been able to hold our pricing stable since spring of 2011, however due to rising operational costs there will be a moderate increase," spokeswoman Michelle Robichaud said in an email.
The cost of breakfast sandwiches, like bacon and egg on an English muffin and the turkey sausage sandwich, will go up 10 cents to $2.99 before tax.
The move comes as Tim Hortons (TSX:THI) says it faces "significantly higher operating costs," which include rising prices for coffee beans and meat on the commodities market."

As highlighted, back then prices were calmly raised when "higher operating costs" were encountered. They didn't go on the warpath and threaten their suppliers. Since labour is on of the many "operating costs" businesses of this nature have, I don't really see the logic in their reaction then (go with the flow, raise prices and pass the cost along to the end customer) versus now (fight the weakest, most vunerable of their staff.)

Wynne is rarely correct on anything but I can't see TH's reaction to this increase in operating cost as anything but corporate bullying, plain and simple.
