Who's still riding? (Fall 2017 / Winter 2018 edition)

The only time surface rust is an issue is if parts that need lube are not lubed properly, like suspension linkage from the factory.Every bike i own gets disassembled and lubed properly in those kind of areas with good waterproof grease.A little bit of high pressure water past the seals will get in and possibly push some winter brine in with it.The results are badly corroded needle bearings or teflon coated bushings. They are a ***** to repair when left unattended for a time.Use a garden hose and the problem is reduced a lot.
Prepare your ride properly (dielectric grease in the electricals also) and winter riding is not a problem.

exactly.

Dish soap and some microfibre cloth when I want to make it shiny....lube the chain otherwise I leave it to the factory engineers to design a reliable and all weather machine.

Saw 2 people out myself, someone on 404 headed south near Steeles and a dual sport? @ Bayview and Sheppard not too long ago.

saw 3 ppl ride past work, an old gixxer, an r3, and a cbr250/300

Got out for a few hours. Bike was a bit cranky to get going after not having been running since October, but the battery held in there until it fired off.

Felt great to be out again, if not still a bit brisk.

Freezing rain warning here for tonight now. Yay.

Good for you. Hope you are recovered. To me riding has any pains you may have disappear. :)

Hey guys.

Brand spanking new rider here. Bike is still in storage waiting for the right time to pull it out.

Was wondering for winter-ish and rainy riding, what precautions, and after-actions I should do?

If anyone could direct me or guide me on products and things to do after riding, it would be much appreciated!

lube chain before riding in salty conditions. Go easy till temps rise and roads get dry

Layer up with lots of clothing. For today, I used my two-piece zip-together leathers over jeans, and a long-sleeve shirt and sweater under the jacket. This was good enough for about 20 km at a time.

Take it easy, there are patches of sand, potholes and broken pavement damaged from the winter. And your tires are cold and the pavement is cold ... less grip.

The other reason to be extra careful is that drivers are even less accustomed to motorcycles on the road than usual.

In addition to what Brian said, some type of a waterproof outer layer will do wonders for helping you stay dry and warmer.

Know that typically your hands and feet (and sometimes knees) will get coldest the first as they are most exposed to the wind and also being extremities.

When in the rain, some parts of the roads may be more slippery than others - things like any metal on the roads (ie streetcar tracks, bridges, etc) or even painted lines on the roads.

If you have a chain drive bike, you may want to give your chain a shot of lube after a ride in the rain or other messy conditions.

Above all, be very gentle and smooth on the controls.

As you get more experience, think about adding in things like heated clothing, heated grips, and other comfort add on's. For now, just get used to the mechanics of riding before introducing too many distractions.

Most importantly check your tire pressure after pulling your bike out of storage.

Yeah, glad to hear you're feeling up to being out and about again! Freezing rain tonight, but then +double digits and dry for much of the day so should be good!

Wait a bit longer would be the advice I'd give you.

As others have touched on there's still a lot of winter grime on the roads, especially at intersections. Many a new rider have dumped their bikes after hitting a patch of crud in a corner - experience will bring with it an increased awareness of these sorts of risks and can make riding in less than ideal conditions perfectly viable, but we were all beginners once and your mind will be all over the place when you start out and being hyper-aware of road conditions this time of year is unlikely to be front-of-mind where it should be.

Tires also have less traction in cold conditions, and cars are not expecting to see bikes this time of year either..although arguably they never see us to begin with, but that's another story...although all the more reason you want better conditions to start out in.

went for about 30 minutes after lubing the chain and putting some air in the tires. filled up the tank before going home. cold weather still ahead

Beautiful day -- quick zip on FJoozy up to Mussleman's Lake, warming up SuBa now for a quick(er) zip to Scugog.
