Scotch anyone?

Well a friend of mine just moved to Canada from Scotland less than a year ago and he confimed this is how they say cheers. Maybe he has an identity crisis? ;)

Coming from my part of the World, we were raised on Johnnie Walker Black Label with some water and ice, these days I only have it with ice. For special occasions I have pulled out the Blue Label but do not care for it personally. Last time I flew out of Pearson I picked up a bottle of Johnnie Walker King George Vth....must admit that I still prefer Black Label.

The best prices I have found anywhere are the Duty Free @ Fort Erie, Canadian side before crossing in to the USA. Fantastic prices at a fraction of the cost at the LCBO and MUCH cheaper than other duty frees.

The LCBO at Summerhill usually hosts events where you get to sample some of the finest stuff from around the World. It's not a free event but worth the money given the choice of items available for sampling.

A must try scotch at a decent price point is "The Singleton" single malt. Not available at all LBCO stores but if you find it, give it a try. At $55.00 a bottle…you will not be disappointed!!
 
Johnnie Walker Blue is great stuff but pricey, best way to get it is when you go across the border at duty free, I picked up a bottle of Johnnie Walker Platinum last year for $110.00 at the duty free but I haven't opened it yet, I think that I just might have to crack it & give it a taste!

BTW, which McClellands is it you've tried (I'm guessing it's the Isley since you mentioned smokey)? Have you tried any of their other 3?

Monkey Shoulder is a good cheap scotch that I tried last summer at a whiskey bar and really liked. It's a blend though but for the price it's a great everyday drink if you like it (cheap enough to try that's for sure).

Yup thats the one i usually buy but ive tried all 3. The fruity one is nice too but a bit too sweet for my taste. ut at that price, all 3 were more than good.

I sincerley enjoyed the much cheaper gold label more (although not a fan of blended in general)

Persoanlly i strictly stick to single malt scotch when i go shopping. When i can afford it, i really enjoy the 18yr old bottle of laphroaig. It's very peaty and has a distinguished taste that i find in no other scotch.. For my casual drinking, i find a very cheap $40 bottle of single malt, smoky mcclelland is very satisfying.

Black label
Glenlivet
Jack Daniels
And just added cc small batch to the roster

The JD is dirt cheap and laffed upon by most.. And even me before... Then one day I tried it again.. And I like it!! Like ashcan says ... you like what you like

I tried jw gold, double black and platinum and the black label to me is better then the other three. Not to say those are bad but I just prefer.

And as far as the jack Daniels goes.... It was good enough for frank Sinatra :) sipping on some as I write this post :)

yeah black lable is good. I like double black even more since as i mentioned before, i like the smoked peaty taste.

Picked up few of those out in my travels and I must say...pleasantly surprised.

For novelty reason, decided to pick up the Glenmorangie 18 Years Old Extremely rare. Not a bad bottle for $100.

Not scotch, but my new favorite whiskies are the ones coming out of Tasmania in Australia. Sullivan's cove won the single malt last year, and Nant distillery just picked up a huge accolade. If you can get your hands on one or few don't hesitate.

I'll be looking for this stuff, we'll be in Bora Bora in two weeks and headed for Fiji or New Zealand depending on the weather. If Import taxes and duties have anything to do with it we will be looking at any Whisky NOT of Scottish origin. The French polynesian franc is no powerhouse currency in the global market.
