Any recommendations on earphones (music, google maps directions) for riding ?

Anyone try Cardo Scala instead of Sena? It's cheaper freedom 1 is $133.95 and freecom4 is 194.95 at GP.

I'm not familiar with those particular models, but when I was shopping between Sena and Cardo, I found that Senas tend to win out on interface as in the rotary dial is very user friendly with gloved hands, it's a popular brand so when linking for communication, if it's what all your buddies use, you're probably gonna wind up with a Sena as well to make it easier. With Cardos, the main advantage is weather/water-proofness. Cardos are far more water resistant than Senas. So if you're a commuter rain or shine, the Cardo will probably last longer.

did you see this here a few days ago?
pertinent to the topic, and pretty funny

lol funny and very informative video. Thanks for sharing! Ryan F9 FTW.

Thanks! Yup, was just about to summarize the same after watching F9 reviews. You nailed it.

I'm so surprised that Senas are not waterproof. For that reason alone, Cardo wins in my book. You're right though, the user interface seems pretty terrible on the Cardos, given the tiny buttons and complex series of presses required, especially with a gloved hand. Although, the new Cardo PackTalk has voice control.

Basically, Cardo Freecom 1 is useful if you have no friends who ride and/or don't use these products (communicates with your phone). Freecom 2 is to communicate with pillion rider. Freecom 3/4 so on ...

Not to mention Cardos have mesh network to connect with other riders. Seems like a great piece of tech - sort of like a living, breathing network.
Sena introduced the mesh network with the 30k, which is overpriced.

Please feel free to add/correct if I'm wrong.

sure

OP since you can't opt for the Pioneer Rayz you either have to cough up for Bose for noise cancelling or get something like the Shure 215s which are popular ( I use as well )
They are durable, reasonably low profile....popular with riders.

Key to road noise isolation is the quality of the tip and the fit.
Westone and Comply make excellent tips ( stay off silicon )

I use a very thin balaclava that keeps the earphones snug and much easier to get the helmet on and off. Oxford makes a super thin one. Easier to wash than your helmet too.

What di you do with your iPhone?

Missed this. Shure has great reviews it seems. If I don't get a Cardo/Sena, I'd likely get the Shures.
Also, thanks for the protip on the balaclava. Great idea!

I carried an iphone 4 for almost 4-5 years. Still have it in mint condition despite dropping it a few times (no damage thanks to superior build quality), battery life still lasts one whole day surprisingly. Just felt too slow for browsing and limited 3G internet connectivity. New iphones are nowhere as good in build quality as the old tanks. Ended up getting 2 LG G3s for free (thanks to koodo and redflagdeals). G3 broke after 2 years, so got a Samsung S7 now.

Edit: according to camelx3, lowest price from Amazon.ca for Shure 215s was $97.71 in December last year. I set a price drop alert on the item. If luck has it, it would hit soon.

Anyone try out the MEE M6 Pro IEM headphones ? Look like a copy of Shure SE215, but reviews are great and are half the price ~ $60.

Here is a fotnine video and they recommend these as well. Skip to 2:20

Edit: MEE M6 pros come with Comply foam tips, 2 sets of cables, one with remote, and from all the reviews I've seen, seem to compete with Shures. I might give these a shot.

I did not like the Mee 6 originals despite glowing reviews...too bright and brittle...no bottom end.

Doesn't seem they have changed - bright sounding. bass thin music is the last thing you need while riding.

Verdict
In that way, the MEE audio M6 PROs entertain, but they need to rein in their brightness and be more rhythmically and dynamically impressive to be truly recommendable, even at this modest price.

I picked up my Shure 215s for $80 new if you look around.

Here is a review of the 215s from the same source.

Ah yeah, i've been reading reviews for the past hour, and am leaning towards 215s again. $80 is an amazing price. I checked, it was that price during black friday last year, at Canada Computers. Currently, it's going for $129 everywhere - amazon, newegg, canada computers etc.

I ordered a set of the Mee 6 pros, will be here Tuesday
will post up my thoughts on them
never really been a music while riding guy
but always an earplug guy...these may work for both

Nice! With the comply foam tips, these would work well as ear plugs I think. Some of the reviews claim the fit is a hit/miss, while others felt uncomfortable using them for longer durations.

Eager to know what you think of them. Will wait for your review.

Thanks for the links! I'm keeping an eye on Kijiji for a sealed set. Not too keen on buying used earphones. Also heard people are selling a lot of Shure knock offs.

I have an android.

I've narrowed down my choices to the Mee M6 pro or the Shures 215. I have a bad habit of overthinking things...

Mee? .....I think you take a risk that you won't like them....I was sadly disappointed and I tried hard to get a decent sound, burned in, better tips ....I think they are still kicking around somewhere.
215s the sound is good and who does not like a bit extra bass when on the road ( and it's not overbearing at all )and the 215s are reliable.

Why ever worry about used earphones?...just put on new tips.
I bought mid level AudioTechnica Ultimate Ears for a long time and liked the price and sound...did not like the lack of interchangeable cables or lack of durability ...seemed to fail just after the warranty ran out.

Panasonic are drop dead reliable, very decent sound but not such low profile. Pricing tho is very good and they might have a slimmer pair now.
Did not see any

I've been using a pair of Xiaomi (Piston 3) for the past couple years. They had great reviews and at $20 were always put up against $100 sets. Took a chance and liked them better than the nice $125 JBL set I had that I found too bulky for in-helmet use. Still going strong. Recommended if you can still find a pair.

I use the Shure se215's with the grey rubber tips. The black memory foam tips actually blocked too much sound for my liking. You can play music through them at the lowest volume and its still crisp

hey @JavaFan, did you receive the Mees ? Wondering what you make of them. Thanks!

Yeah they have good volume range ...not all do

yes, I like the sound, no lack of bass for me
but my android has a Yamaha DAC
and an equalizer app that works at the hardware level
so I can make them biased any way I like

the foam tips do a good job of sealing off ambient noise
unfortunately traveling on business and have not been able to try on the bike yet
but so far I'm happy with the purchase
