I'll admit I don't use laptops much but if you buy a nvidia or ati card for a desktop, the drivers will be updated by amd or nvidia until the product line's end of life and it won't crash....mostly.

Hopefully one day consumers can build their own laptops.

The chips are built on spec for the oems. The drivers are proprietary information. Cards in the computer tend to be different (though oems have been known to get them built on spec too).
