Black ice usually starts close to late fall/winter

Watch out under bridges where there's a permanent shadow.

conversely, overpass bridges will freeze up first - often with black ice, as they aren't sitting directly on a large mass of heat holding earth. Overpasses can freeze up quickly when temps drop and freezing air blows over a wet road.

this is why they have road signs showing "bridge freezes over"

Bridges and elevated roads like the Gardiner get a lot of ice.
The cold wind blows not only on top, but also underneath.
It freezes on both the top and the bottom.
