He must have just closed his eyes and squeezed as hard as he could, juiced up on adrenaline, when he saw the vehicle ahead slow/stop. He avoided the rear end, since that vehicle drove away.
I couldn't do a stoppie if I tried, with my old bikes.
I think he may have got a moment of locked front wheel over the expansion joint, then it flipped when the front got back on the higher friction asphalt.
IMO, he was trying to show-off/have fun. To me it looks like he locked his rear wheel first to get a little skid going, and then tried for the stopping - but failed.
