Re: Down Under on a KLR 650 & ST1100 ...third season

Well taking a long lens down to a pool might raise a few eyebrows ( and did but elsewhere - I was shooting teens - skating boarding and some over protective mother was muttering away )

But the pool is also a good bird watching area as it's on the mud flats.

Was taking a break and there was a pro and a couple of cuties doing a photo shoot right in front of me.

BTW the offer still stands for a low cost rental. The ST1100 is available for not a lot per week under the you break it you fix it rule. Flights are $2k or so.

I wish I could just drop everything and go away for a year on the motorcycle...

You have to work at dreams.....if you have kids...it's harder....without kids...what's stopping you?

Re: Down Under on a KLR 650 & ST1100 ...season 3

Might have something to do with getting up at 3 am to work.....decisions decisions.

If it's not raining you jump out early - cool and gorgeous

Putting in a request for another kind of bird photo: wild budgerigar!

Don't know if you're in the right part of the country though.

Damn, your photos remind me I haven't ridden in what, three, four months?

Probably have to head a fair way inland for that, and when you see a "wild" budgie you see THOUSANDS of them lol

nah - just wander down to the pool at dusk

then you get these guys playing goofy up in the trees in Kuranda - I swear my neck still hurts trying to get a clear shot.

When I was a kid, we had a balcony wrapped around the whole house. A couple of these guys landed at lunchtime one day and we decided to feed them.... Next day a half a dozen turned up at about 11am.. few days later a dozen at 10am... on and on it went, within a couple weeks there would be 50-100 at 6AM screeching like that, awesome birds but my parents got ****** off so had to stop feeding them LOL They would stay on your hand/shoulder/head and let you pat them while they ate etc... oh and they would crap EVERYWHERE.

Mind you that noise is nowhere near as bad as a flock of cockatoos making a Pine tree in your backyard the meeting spot for morning brunch.

Yup - I just about lost control of the KLR on a forest track when a cocktoo cruised about 10' overhead and let loose a screech....they are incredibly loud.
Of course Kookaburra's make you think you wandered into a Tarzan movie when they get going.
We have a gang nearby that are much fun in the morning.

Kookas will get used to hand feeding as well despite those snake killer beaks.

These guys showed up at our cabin looking for a handout

and we hand fed them - funny birds.

Cockatoos not so much...take your finger off and shatter your ear drums. Both are astonishingly large birds.

Are they good eating?

Sent from my tablet using my paws

both are protected and both could take a finger off.
Now a wallabie on the other hand...

pretty friendly

but don't tangle with a big guy....

729_roo-620x349.jpg

When a large male kangaroo savagely attacked Robert Franklin in his own backyard, he thought for sure he would be killed.
It clawed at Mr Franklin's face, chest and legs, before knocking him flat on his back at his property in Torbanlea, near Hervey Bay, north of Brisbane.
But even that was not enough to stop the rogue marsupial, which continued to gouge at the Torbanlea man's flesh as he lay helpless on the ground.

"It clawed me and I backed off, then it clawed me again," he said.

Mr Franklin, who is aged in his 70s, managed to escape only after his wife, Rosena, used a mop to distract the roo and it pursued her instead.

and you reallllly don't want to hit one on the bike ( or car for that matter ) ...balls of solid muscle.

Of course you do need to be concerned as you ARE good to eat....

and they are not just in zoos and croc farms

I cross on that ferry several times a riding season. :idea1:

Finally have both bikes available and fully functional. Came across a cool new battery design.

Shorai-scale-208x300.jpg

http://www.ridermagazine.com/gear/shorai-battery-review.htm/

3 year warranty and can be left a year and will maintain a charge. Total different technology.

I either pay $90 a battery for lead acid with 1 year warrany x 3 as they won't hold a charge on a trickle charger on a 9 month layoff in the tropics, something I wish I knew last year.
Or spend more for this battery and know I will get at least three years and maybe more

The last thing I want out in the outback is a flaky battery.

Well constructed....threaded posts ( no more lost nuts ) - comes fully charged.

Took this last year....why you don't go near the water's edge.

This was mama croc protecting her nest.
She was entirely invisible a second before this....the guide tapped a stick on the shoreline.

Screen%2520Shot%25202014-02-19%2520at%2520Feb%252C%252019%2520%2520%2520%25202014%2520%2520%2520%25204.13.01%2520AM.jpg

and she launched like a cruise missile.

Her nest is the leafy mound in the background.

finally a decent day out.....ST running nice - not too hot or humid. Gonna have lunch up at Daintree Village...

Yes Virginia there is sun somewhere....

a somewhat unintended effect.....the mad Cassowary rider...catch that helmet

Good intentions for a long ride but the wet season got in the way heading south and west so cut it short - still got 300k in or so and second part of the day was lovely.

Minor cyclone brewing off the coast so a rainy and windy weekend ahead.
Might get out today....

Course the backyard has it's pleasures.

Screen_shot_2014-03-07_at_Mar_7_2014_9_33_16_AM.jpg

Stayed in place out in my backyard in Cairns to let me play with the focus and lens setting ( my Gx1 is being ornery )

They get trapped in our deck area but usually get out on their own.....so hard to catch with the wings open

Happy with that at 10m on a greyish day and less than perfect camera. Time for a Gx7

Got a shortish ride up the very twisty and slow going ( yeah some of the drops are severe and no rails ) Copperload.

Rain showers most of the day - it's totally lovely up there ( there are some photos earlier in the thread....cooler than down in Cairns - it's the drinking water reservoir so no noisy boats or people.

Some Australian Pelicans at very long range. Happy with the shot given conditions and distance.
