Hey Gta Motor Cycle members,

I need your help with the annual cycling fundraiser ''Ride to Conquer Cancer''. It's a two day cycling journey going from Toronto to Niagara Falls. I have already created an event on the calendar but I thought I would bring it to your attention this way as well. Now you might wonder what cycling has to do with motorcycles... they both have 2 wheels I guess?!

But we really urgently need dedicated motorcyclists like yourself that are able to volunteer their time on their motorcycle during a very special weekend. It's happening on June 7th & 8th 2014 which is only less than 3 weeks away. We invite all experienced riders to join the Moto Safety Team for the 2014 Enbridge Ride to Conquer Cancer. Help 5,000+ bicyclists travel safely across the 6 routes of over 525km between Toronto and Niagara Falls! We need at least 120 moto safety team members ASAP:). Motorcycles play an integral role in the safety and organization of this cycling fundraiser. We’re excited to present you this memorable opportunity to support a
cause that touches so many while having a great time! We welcome all motorcycle makes and models, and all riders (with passengers) as long as you have group-riding experience in all weather conditions, and will honour your time commitment to the team.:glasses6:

Throughout the weekend you will have free meals, free accommodation in Hamilton and 2 Crew t-shirts which you will receive on event.
There is a small one time registration fee of $25.00 CAD to off set the costs. Gas re-reimbursement will be offered for kilometers ridden on the event.
Overall, you will have an amazing experience as part of this highly respected fundraiser that has helped raise millions of dollars for cancer research at the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre.

To register or to learn more, please contact myself Bas de Beer: bdebeer@conquercancer.ca or give me a call directly 1 (877) 699-2453.
You can also register online at http://to14.conquercancer.ca/site/Pa...gename=reg_now > CLICK ON INDIVIDUAL and follow the steps.

Feel free to get in touch with me if you have any questions or simply just leave a reply below!

Thank you for your time!

Bas

If you can find the time to help out please do. I have been involved in the ride for 5 years now the first 4 on my Bicycle and last year working on Moto Saftey. It an experience you will never forget and help out a great cause - and I can think of n where else you will find 5000 people thanking you. If you have any questions about the weekend feel free to message me as well.

Bas and Spinner, what are the responsibilities/roll of the motor-cyclists?

My first aid and cpr responder cert's have long expired.

Hey MSRP and rbjeepthing,

No First aid or CPR responder is required! We have this covered already through EMS and First Responders out on the route.
Here is some more information from my Moto Safety Team Captains on the responsibilities and experience.

Here’s some more information on the Moto Safety Team and how to register.

1. This is NOT a ride! It may be called that because that's what the 5,000 cyclists will be doing - but that is NOT what we will be doing. Our job is to STAND THERE in the middle of various intersections, for hours on end, to cheer them on as they cycle by and to get them through the intersection(s) safely.

2. How the Moto Safety team functions: We've had groups of friends in the past that joined to "be together as a group", but that does NOT happen on this event. Everyone gets paired with just one partner for the duration of the 2-day ride, and they get dispatched together to key intersections. The success of our team is our reliance on our one partner, and the clear communication with the route captain and with the dispatcher. We are the first team out on the road at 6:30am on Saturday, last one in at camp after 7:30pm... and then we repeat on Sunday. However, all food & drinks are provided, and all fuel will be reimbursed at the end of the event. We will each also get a cash stipend in return for using our own cell phones during the event.

3. We do NOT patrol the route! Our job is to get from one key intersection to the next key intersection, as fast and as safe as possible - and to stay there until called upon to move forward to the next intersection. As such, we don't ride with the cyclists, by the cyclists, alongside the cyclists, or really anywhere near the cyclists until we get to our intersection or when we leave it. At other times, fastest and shortest route wins.

I've been doing these events for 12 years now, and have a pretty good idea of what to expect - and what to ask of my team members - so we continue the event's success.

In closing, to join call 1-877-699-2453 and ask for BAS - and join the Moto Safety Team as a CREW member or you can do it online at http://to14.conquercancer.ca/site/PageServer?pagename=reg_now click on ‘’Join a Team’’ and type in Moto Safety. After selecting Moto Safety follow the steps to register online.

We have a few requests:

- tell us if you have a preference for which route to be assigned to (if any) or if you're indifferent: Toronto or Niagara
- tell us about your motorcycle and a bit about your riding experience

I trust that group riding and all-weather riding isn't a problem. We very much look forward to working alongside with you for the RCC 2014. Kindly please also forward this email to any of your other buddies who ride - and feel free to invite more friends to contact us about the event: we really need the support!

Call today to register at 1-877-699-2453 and ask for Bas who will gladly register you and any more of your friends.

Feel free to ask myself any more questions you might have.

Bas, correct me if I'm mistaken:

  • Crew of two moto's
  • Assigned an intersection
  • Ride to said intersection
  • Call in to confirm when arrived at said intersection
  • Park on side of road
  • Enter intersection when bikes are on approach to hold traffic up
  • Exit when the current group is through
  • Rinse/repeat until we're called off to the next intersection

Sound about right?

Almost right: we do NOT hold up traffic. In fact, we don't interfere with traffic in any way, shape, or form. What we do is STOP THE CYCLISTS until it's safe for them to proceed through the traffic condition (whether stop signs, traffic lights, blind turns, or simply giving right-of-way to motorized traffic). In essence, we are there to enforce the HTA and the rules of the road, for the cyclists only.
