Amber alert

Halton Police chiefs comments on Sept 12 shootings (paraphrased). Illegal handgun used by someone with a firearm prohibition. 90% of handguns used in crimes are traced to US, this one not traced yet. We need to do something about this. One of the repair shop shooting victims is on life support and expected to die.

Momin Qureshi asked why the alert was late and useless. Peel chief replied that timing was as quick as possible once multiple shootings were connected. They hoped that everybody would shelter in place based on the alert so no details was fine. (wtf, lock down the province?).

Shooter waited in Tim Hortons for 2:15 prior to first shooting. It seemed like he waited for an officer. They aren't sure if he was waiting for a specific cop or any cop.

While it in no way excuses what he did, the shooter was a 40 yo with an extensive criminal record that had been fired from his job and lived in a Corolla. Doesn't seem like a lot of light was in his life. Sounds like he finally hit bottom and went out shooting.

‘Suspended with pay’ … more like fully paid vacation for being a bad apple and getting caught.

Clean house, and actually pull the pay back upon conviction (Ha!) and that May start the house cleaning.
If a worker gets desk duty they are still working and must get paid. Go home with pay and it can theoretically be clawed back upon conviction.

This guy had a list of convictions and was considered high risk to re-offend. The Saskatchewan killer of ten with eighteen, possibly more, stabbed. He was considered medium risk with 59 convictions, mostly violent crimes.

What do you do with these guys? In some states they have three strike laws, Strike three and you're in for life.

Strike three could be stealing a tee shirt. The economics suck.

Maybe a points system like drivers licenses. Violent crimes take more points away then non-violent and when you run out, mandatory jail time..

For how long? Do we end up with a prison full of houseless people that caught a pile of theft charges? Does paying 200k per year in perpetuity help society? Does jail cost more or less than continual policing/property damage? I'm ok with the concept but not sure there is a viable path to implementation.

The Saskatchewan killer had around thirty violent offences. How many is enough to go life on a perpetrator?

No idea, personally I feel violent crime should be dealt with very harshly to deter people from committing them in the first place. 30 convictions I'd say is well deserving of lifetime separation from the rest of society.

I'd pick a number well under 30. Maybe three strikes for violent crimes? Catches those that are a danger to society but avoids perpetual incarceration for property crimes?

A lot of people in the USA think you can beat the bad out of people. I think it beats it further in.

If I binge watch Fantasy island or the Love Boat I want to think a loving talk will change the corrupt minds to caring ones. Where there is life there is hope but what if a dozen innocent lives are lost trying to wait out a cure for one sick mind.

The movie "Monster" was about Aileen Wuornos, a prostitute that murdered a number of her clients and was executed. If you read up on her background it points out that her father was in jail when she was born and as she was growing up she was sexually assaulted by just about every male in her family and also pimped out.

What punishment did the males in her family get? It should have been a mass lethal injection.

There are people born bad and others made bad. Sorting them out isn't easy or foolproof. The mental damage from abuse isn't easy to reverse and many times impossible.

Scary thought: I know a mentally imbalanced woman that looks like Wuornos. I fear for her hubby.

Latest update...how does someone with his track record get let out back into society?...obviously rehabilitation doesn't work for everyone, and maybe we should look at longer term facilities to house people like this...maybe have them "work" in settings where they can be supervised and contribute by doing something needed by communities...I honestly don't know what the solution is, but our current system is definitely not working...RIP and condolences to the families

The fact the mechanic gave him a chance with his record and hired him blows my mind. He paid for it with his life.

I say give people like this a pickaxe and have them mine lithium for the rest of their lives to support our green electric cars...

He already had a gun and it looks like he tried to get another from the officer. It looks like he was getting ready for a shoot up.

What to do with repeat offenders after X convictions?

As Bishop Tutu said, "We got to stop just pulling bodies out of the river and go upstream to find out why they're falling in."

Will it get worse?

IIRC you are a teacher and will see the beginning of the trends. How do you, if you are allowed, make a difference?

When my daughter was in grade one the kids were playing on the monkey bars and, being six years old, hanging by their knees with their underpants showing. One girl points out that she has Mickey Mouse underpants and another doesn't. A fashinista at six years old.

Do you recommend a parent buy their kid $300 Nikes that will be outgrown in months? If they get the Nikes they're "In" If they don't they're rejected. Does the parent buy into the hype (Setting an example for the kid) or let their kid get shunned?

Fake it til you make it. Few make it and the rest are crushed.

Not every kid is an A+. I assume you have to discretely tell some parents that. Do they work with that or go into denial?

What do they tell their kid? "Johnny you're an A+ but the teacher / school / everyone is against you because you're (enter race, gender, physical characteristic etc)"

No scoring sports games sound great but when the kid starts working they find out the big carrot doesn't go to the slowest worker.

Downward trends noted by my wife

Parents pushing a carriage but instead of talking to the kid they're on the phone and ignoring the tyke. Our daughter was trying to pronounce words when she had barely learned to crawl because my wife was constantly pointing things out to her and saying the words.

Daycare

A necessary evil foisted on us by capitalism. We need multi year maternity leave.

We end up with a lot of attention starved kids. How many are diagnosed as hyper-active? They don't need drugs, they need a hug. Oh wait, that's sexual assault.

Ban birthday and Christmas gifts. The shopping guilt trip for not spending enough time with a loved one.

Challenge: take your yearly gift budget for a loved one Eg. $1000 and divide it by 365. Now take that $3.74 and get them something every day to say you care. It takes a lot of thought.

The price isn't impossible. Buy a nice piece of paper and special coloured pen and write a note. Depending on who it's for it can be inspirational or something that would make a porn star blush.

Little of the above will work because because the merry-go-round is spinning too fast. It's going to get faster so pick your time or the time will pick you.

Not exactly an Amber alert, but once again a poor handling of the system. Transcribing this one straight off my phone in its entirety...

"The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) are investigating suspects believed to be armed.. Police request that you shelter in place. Please monitor local media for further updates. EMERGENCY ALERT: Shelter in Place"

Opp.ca (main website) has collapsed under the weight of the entire province (presumably) trying to figure out what's going on, but following that link specifically does name a suspect, Randall MCKENZIE, and a vehicle (black 2021 Chevrolet pickup).

When I first got this alert, news didn't have much info other than an officer was shot in/near Hagersville at around 5PM, but the story has since expanded. Shelter in place alert issued in southwestern Ontario as police look for suspects in shooting near Hagersville, Ont.

Edit: I either misread the story details, or the details changed. Officer was shot around 2:40PM, alert was received at 5:43PM. I don't know the circumstances, it's entirely possible officer showed up alone and it took that long for them to be discovered

You don’t say?

They could have included crucial information as the location in the alert.
