Re: Change to Helmet Laws in Ontario

Why not allow everyone to ride without a helmet? Exemption in this sense is discrimination, but I guess you have to appeal to this group since they are the next generation voting base.

I hope those turbans are DOT.

Re: Change to Helmet Laws in Ontario

We just better not see a rise in our insurance premiums because of this.

New section to insurance forms?

It might actually be better for the insurance industry's $$$ if you don't survive an accident.

Re: Change to Helmet Laws in Ontario

Some US states allow riding without helmets. Sure it's rider's personal accountability and responsibility with respect to their own well-being, but do you know what the bottom-end reason for their governments allowing this? Their public health system. In event of a rider sustaining an injury serous enough to cause irreversible or long term brain injury due to not wearing a helmet the province of Ontario will be held responsible for providing necessary free health support indefinitely. Those living in Ontario will be paying for this through tax.

If same happens in the US it will be on the rider's insurance policy and their family's wallets to keep him alive. Not the US government.

Have you seen the stats on this? My gut feeling is this will save the health care system money as many previously survivable crashes will result in fatalities which are relatively cheap with respect to health care dollars. I haven't looked for a study in a while to see whats out there.

A really interesting study would be the crash effectiveness of a turban. It looks like they may work well for one hit (and then fly off).

From a personal perspective, I think religious accommodation for motorcycle helmets is dumb. There is no ingrained right for us to ride. The rules are clearly defined, if you don't want to comply with the rules, don't ride a bike (or take your lumps with tickets). Alternatively, if Ontario wants to ax helmet laws, go ahead, but do it for everybody.

OK, agree with it or not we all have to appreciate the irony!

It was the typical Conbots on here that had the most negative things to say about this, now their guy passes it! lol

I think safety should be above religious. Well just hope the insurance doesn’t cost them an arm and a leg.

I hope it does......but us the ware helmets should not have to pay more because of the LAW BREAKERS.

My guess if the insurance companies actually see high payouts due to this...

They will find a way to charge more. Using cars as an example, discount for snow tires, discount for OBD2 tracker, discount for...

Coming on your motorcycle policy, discount for full gear and full face helmet.... accident without (if you take the discount) = no pay for your injuries.

We all know a "discount" on insurance like this actually means everyone pays more, and some just pay a little less than more. Unforeseen consequences, the pirate and squid crowd pays the most. Power rangers get the discount...

You may not be that far off. It may be similar to the question "Is you car garaged?" or "Do you install snow tires?" except it will be something like "Do you wear a helmet when riding". If you check yes and have an accident while riding without a helmet it gives them some wiggle room

I personally don't care one way or the other. If someone is stupid enough to ride without a helmet, well to each his own

I'm all for equal rights I really am. But not special rights over everyone else.... This law sucks and as one poster said " make helmets optional " Won't matter to me, i'll always wear a helmet .....

I just hope that the insurance companies don't find a way to stick it to all of us because of this law. Some minor accidents can turn into moderate accidents where a helmet would have allowed a rider to walk away. Some moderate accidents will turn into fatalities because the rider wasn't wearing a helmet...in the end it is a CHOICE to ride, and IMO if you don't like the rules don't play.

Unfortunately....don't like rules...kick and scream loudly so you get your way. Bonus points for ideological/religious reasons.

When I crashed (low sided) my motorcycle (eons ago) I picked up the bike got back on and rode away, continued on my way to work (very minor crash). My helmet took a good hit when I went down (I figured afterwards that I likely actually had a minor concussion). The long and short of it, if I wasn't wearing the helmet I am pretty sure my skull would have been split open... So minor unscheduled dismount to fatal...

I maintain that the number of people who will not wear a helmet under this exemption are so statistically insignificant that we will see ZERO change to anything that affects the majority who are forced by law to wear helmets.
Ins. premiums won't go up
The sky will not fall
