Harley's new idea

In fact one of the big reasons is a lot of them don't own cars. They put car money toward a home and use public transport. Not owning a car is a $10,000/yr saving. That makes a bike a great summer getaway alternative.
That's some crappy car to own if it costs $10k/year. I own 3 vehicles and they don't cost me that much.

not really, between car payments and gas I'm pretty much there, add insurance and maintenance and that's pretty bang on.

^^^ edit: beat me to it :D

Fuel and insurance? That alone should get you to 5k. + car payments + repairs/tires/oil changes. 10k is probably about right

Hmm now that I did the math I guess you're actually fairly close but again, for 3. I'm at $4200 in gas and insurance. Throw in my maintenance and you're probably right but then again I own a super unreliable 2 stroke that seems to need a rebuild every year and a Porsche from the 80s.

I'm at 5-6k for last year and I own outright, do all my own work, get parts at cost and don't even pay for oil changes (job perks)

Cars are expensive.

That's a separate issue. Anyone low on cash shouldn't be paying near that. Part of why I got rid of the WRX I had.

They seem even more expensive once you stop owning one too. It's been a few years since my car was written off. Went full scooter instead of replacing the thing. Each time I start shopping again, I look at the numbers and think:

"Spend at least 10K + insurance and registration for the privledge of driving in this benighted city? I've got better plans for that money, you godless liberals, and it rhymes with barley."

*blips throttle*

Bow dow de de dow. Now where did I put those Gremlin Bells?

Went inside a tiny Royal Enfield dealership in London last fall, t'was neat. One of each bike and a small selection of gear, with an exploded bike behind the counter.

Given their reputation, that might not be a smart way to advertise the brand.

Now that retirement is approaching, my brother is thinking of getting into motorcycle touring.
He's never ridden before so I advised him to buy something at or below 500cc to learn on.
I talked him out of a Royal Enfield.

Thank goodness
If i wanted a bike like that id just get a triumph. Those enfields are junk

It's difficult to find someone who has done the numbers correctly on the annual cost of owning a car. I saw a Toronto Star article that was complete fiction. The U.S. sites have some better references at $8xxx per year. You can imagine how that works out in Canadian dough with our tax and higher insurance plus the outrageous gas tax.

I looked into an Enfield too. It was solid enough, but over 55mph it shakes and that has led to some problems with bolts rattling loose according to some I talked to. They take more care, being basically an antique off the showroom floor. If you don't work on your own machines and plan on highway riding you best steer clear.

I work on my bikes plenty, and the stuff i find out of my capabilities, i have frekeguy work on, and its one thing to do maintenance, quite another to just have a bad bike. 1933 it might have been the best thing on the road, now its out horribly outdated, like a land line.

Seen pics from owners of brand new ones with rust on them, or have the inside of the gas tank painted(so it eventually chips off and clogs the fuel lines) , or the bolts start falling loose.

The japs have set the standard on quality control, and thats something we all take for granted, that our bikes DONT fall apart, or have random breakdowns etc etc

for the record i went to the Jan bike show, and fell in LOVE with the triumphs...i couldnt quite grasp the concept of "Dream bike" up until i laid my eyes on those.
Which is essentially the same concept, gorgeous, beautiful classic bikes...that have modern engines, FI, showa/ohlins suspension, brembo brakes
etc etc

If i ever have the money, ill probably buy me one of those beauties.

A landline is your servant. A cell phone is your master. Know the wire, love the wire.

The maroon/cream paint job and lines of the RE 500 Classic were appealing. Old school cool, even if India has never heard of Loctite. I would ride with a poor boy hat taped to my full-face helmet and start every sentence with: "Oi, guvna'!"

Not digging the new Thruxton over the previous model. The reviews are favourable but USD forks and radial calipers seem a bit out of place to me. Same with the new HD Roadster.

I think it would be best if we all made the assumption that a Royal Enfield is bare bones basic transportation for around town.
IMO not even remotely suitable for the highway or touring.

Or just get a grom to satisfy that criteria, cheaper, well made, and by all accounts, hella fun. (Saw a big dude carving the twisties near glenn williams, on one looking like a circus bear )
