Is this an April fools joke - rate trippled for no reason

All of the charts are meaningless to me for the most part.
WE are getting ripped off in Ontario...yet we keep paying and taking it.
How the heck do we possibly change this?

I was told by a senior insurance agent that we pay the most in North America.

In large part because claims payouts are the most in North America.

proof please

Maximum claims payouts are directly related to coverage limits. Coverage limits in the US are in most places so low that they wouldn't cover much more than a broken arm and leg, never mind more catastrophic injuries. In most of the US, the expectation is that major injuries and losses will be settled through lawsuits, and the maximum the insurance company will pay out is the coverage maximum, which in some cases is as low as $10K for bodily injury.

Such is not the case in Ontario, where the threshold at which a lawsuit can be launched or result in awards is strictly regulated by law.

General summary of premium and claims average in the US is at http://www.iii.org/fact-statistic/auto-insurance

As far as other Canadian provinces go, here is something from the Financial Post which reported on rate difference not too long ago.
As the chief executive officer of one of the province’s automobile insurance firms put it, the numbers are staggering. Among Ontario’s 9.6 million motorists, there were 85,000 accident and bodily injury insurance claimants in 2014. According to the industry’s official statistics agency, the average bodily injury claim came to $143,630. By comparison, the average in Alberta is $12,785. The average accident benefit payout was $31,785 in Ontario, compared with $7,895 in Nova Scotia and $3,766 in Alberta. http://business.financialpost.com/fp-comment/terence-corcoran-why-ontarios-auto-insurance-system-is-a-car-wreck

hmmm
Maybe that is the deterrent right there.
You are at fault then it's your problem and you are on the hook for your and the other person's bills.
Insurance can cover the cars and some minor stuff. OHIP provides care, you wont die because you don't have insurance.

Now we have a built in mechanism to force ppl to be better drivers or pay the price.
* I some states you can get PIP Personal Insurance Protection.

People in New York and California seem to survive, why are we special.

So you are saying that there are less accidents in the U.S. then?

Don't know
What I am saying is that some US states have about the same if not more than the CDN population and yet they seem to have functional and profitable insurance companies and those US states do not have OHIP or the like.
