Hit and run. Thankfully not on my bike.

Driving into work this morning, I was stuck in some stop and go traffic. I heard a yell behind me, vaguely felt a bump, and looked in my mirrors to see a van very close behind me. I wasn't even sure he hit, but noticed him driving very oddly. An exit later as traffic cleared, I moved over to the right lane, and the van sped past. I tried to follow, but the van was weaving through traffic and pretty clearly trying to get away.

Got to work, figuring it likely only hit my hitch, but sadly he had hit my bumper. left some of his paint, and scratched some of mine, doesn't look dented or bent though.

I called up my insurer to see if reporting it as a hit and run would have any effect on my insurance. I was told if i didn't make a claim, it would have no effect. But i should report within 24 hours.

Next called the non-emergency police number, and found I would have to file the report in person, which means driving back to Hamilton from Oakville before they close tonight. They only have the one open tomorrow, but after 24 hours will have passed.

Any likely hood of filling a report even affecting the guy who hit me? I'm more ****** that he ran.

On one hand, if you make a formal report, it's on your record, albeit not-at-fault... I assume with the plate #, the police will contact the other party and request they attend the collision centre to make a report? And the other party's insurance company will be notified for this collision with the other party at 100% fault...

Ford Ranger? Painted steel bumper - just buff it out. Can get a paintless dent repair if it bothers you.

Umm yea you can make out the plate pretty dam easy file that report and take these pictures in as evidence! If they find him your insurance should at least repair the damage without you paying a deductible. Even if you make a claim it still should not affect your insurance.

Send the video to the police. Take it to the police station and report the license plate. If you can't make it out I think they have software that is able to enlarge the video and clarify it.

Ithe only way you can get the actual guy who hit you is if you testify and are able to recognize him.

It is easier to make out the plate in the video. I'm trying to decide if its worth my time and effort. Effort being leaving work 2 hours early, driving for an hour, and whatever time it takes to file the report.

If its not worth your time then don't bother but you are letting this guy get away with something make him sweat a little guy was obviously a dick bag

I decided I'd be happier getting delicious waffles with strawberries for lunch, rather than drive back to Hamilton to try and get the guy in trouble. I'll see if I can still report it tomorrow morning first thing when I go into work. Despite what my insurance said, I'm still a bit hesitant to get any report made of my truck being in an accident when it is so minor.

Report it. Don't let people get away with hit-and-run, no matter how slight the damage.

Don't sweat the 24-hour time limit (but don't grossly exceed it, either). Report it tomorrow at your convenience.

It won't affect your insurance - particularly if you have video showing what happened. (Probably you don't have video facing backward, but if your vehicle jolted or moved with the hit, it will be visible, and it will be apparent that it wasn't because of you moving backwards)

Just got out from the collision reporting center. Talked with the guy there, but he felt if I wasn't planning to go through insurance, it was in my best interest not to report it, so I wouldn't have involvement in an accident on my record.

Gotta love our insurance system.

You have to go to the reporting centre located in the city the accident happened in

Ok. Seems stupid in today's age of computer systems, but I guess it's the government so I shouldn't be surprised.

Since you have the plate number it should not affect your rates. Actually, I was told any hit and run should not affect rates but if you cannot identify the vehicle you will have to pay the deductible. Since you have their plate number you shouldn't even have to pay that.

Pretty sure that guy lied to you just to get out of doing some work.

Cops don't know everything. Many cops think demerit points are what affects your insurance rates as well - which is wrong, its the ticket itself. Do your research and do what you think is right.

Saved himself some paperwork.

Uhh, you got hit from behind. It's not going to affect your insurance at all.. who cares if it was a hit and run.

The fact it was a hit and run makes it a police matter that has nothing to do with the accident.. the guy committed a criminal offense!
