How do I choose a TV?

I've never owned a television or bought one.
We had one when I was younger and I watched TV by turning it on, switch to channel 3 for Nintendo.

I've been aware that I have no idea how to operate a more modern television since around the late 90s.
When I go to people's houses that have a pile of remotes in their living room, I never touch it, and I have to just watch what other people watch.

I'm getting tired of watching movies on my computer.

So I want to get a TV that I can watch movies from my computer, youtube, netflix, torrents, xbmc whatever.

I'm not obsessed with the minutia of audio and visual quality. My goal is to be able to click play and see and hear it on the TV satisfactorily. I don't have a stereo system either. I have some pretty sick Bose laptop speakers so that would be my only sound output option. I remember TVs used to have speakers in them, is this still the case?

What I THINK I know I need: I need 1080p and HDMI in. I'm ok in the 40" min to 50" max range. I see TVs at Costco for between 450 and 900 that "look" OK. I bought my mom Samsung a few years ago on boxing day, I think it's 42", it seems nice. I think it was like $500. She gets what she needs out of it, but she just watches cable shows and DVDs. I'm partial to Samsung for some reason but open to whatever.

Suggestions? I'm also more comfortable with buying from Costco unless I can buy something better for cheaper somewhere else (without driving more than 1/2 hour). I live 2 minutes from Costco lol. I have Amazon Prime too so if there is something on Amazon that is prime eligible that is great too.

Basically I'm trying to transition from watching movies in bed on a laptop/tablet to doing the same thing from the couch on the TV.

Just go to Bestbuy and check some out. Does the features and control of use work for you.

Then keep an eye open and get it on sale or from Costco or what ever.

Samsung is the king of TVs right now.

The speaks in pretty well any TV suck.

Not sure if it's worth your while to just hook your laptop or computer up to the tv and use it as a monitor?

In any event, I have a 58" Samsung and now I consider it small. It was a Boxing Day sale item.

The only draw back is it takes a few minutes to connect to the web. Once connected it's great for Netflix.

Also browsing the web via remote sux. So it seems like it was gonna be cool for web browsing but, we just end up using the iPad or laptop for that. The TV is for Netflix or bluray.

Picture quality? No one has complained yet. Most seem impressed.

Oh and it gets used for the wii. Does great with that too.

@eljay Costco will not have the latest and greatest, so that may be what you're after. Bought an led LG for my MIL recently from there. Priced right. Also , you get an additional year of warranty with purchase. If you will be using your pc, don't bother with the smart tvs. They will be cheaper and you won't need the features. I'm looking at a Samsung myself right now.

I have a device called "Airtame".. check this trailer out to learn about it. This video is old and is from when it was being launched on Indiegogo. I have their retail product, and it works exactly as it is supposed to. With this device the TV you buy just needs an HDMI. I use my TV as a glorified monitor for my laptop. :D I would buy a basic-ish TV and pair it with something like this. That way you can enjoy all the media from your PC without creating some sort of dedicated computer space near your TV if you wanted to watch directly from your PC.

I just run my laptop to a big monitor. Either by cables or wireless like that Airtame. Only have a TV for the kids Wi.

I'm actually a little stunned that this isn't already built in to TVs already with NFC or Bluetooth or some other magic power I have never used. I had a Nokia phone about 4 years ago that could Bluetooth to a monitor. Because Symbian OS screens are more exciting on monitors than on the phone I guess?
I'm very behind but I thought the future was further ahead.
Still waiting for my Mr. Fusion Delorean adapter to show up as well.

EDIT: this just rang a bell. Damn the thing is $215. How is it different from a Chromecast for $40?

Get a tv with 4k. 1080p is out. Quick refresh rate for action

I don't know what that means...

4k is the a higher resolution. 4x better then 1080, not a lot of media out for it right now.

Samsung, Sharp, LG, Panasonic, all great TV manufactures, you can't go wrong. Some tv's are smart tv's so you have thinks like netflix built into the tv as an app. You can also go with various options like Apple TV or Roku to get more web functionality.

It really is not that confusing with all the controllers, you just have to understand that every device has its own controller and know what device does what. Pretty simple when you get that as you do not do much more.

Get a TV from a brand you like, at the price you want to pay. If you're like me you won't use 90% of the features on it.

People are fussy. You're not. Just get a TV.

Still rocking a 42" Sony from like 6 years ago. It TVs.

I miss my old Sony Wega CRT TV w/analog cable, picture was less smudgy. HD compression artifacts drive me crazy.

You can easily see artifacts in the 4K source signal they use at Best Buy. Ridiculous.

Sony.

You are one loyal mofo ; ) Sony BlackBerry Honda...
You don't see that kind of commitment any more.

OP I have the 40" version of that TV. I'm happy. 4k is for people that gaf , or have more money than I do.

Sony is ok but the days of commanding a premium are long gone. Samsung is the bonafide leader now in terms of R&D, variety, price point via segment and even quality.

Panasonic was king of plasma but they gave up the crown.

A lot of the internals and screens are the same source now. Generally speaking. There are exceptions.
