jack up car one side at a time. safe?

not when its a few hundred dollars for an oil change, and more than a hundred is just for the labor, no thanks, I'd rather keep that in my pocket

I pay 100$ bucks, incl. proper spec oil for my car ... If I can afford to buy the car, I am sure I can afford the oil change once every 15K kms. Sorry, the argument to do my own oil change under those circumstances is just silly. If I could not find anyone to do the job right, sure I would consider it, but that's not the case.

Just the oil alone (proper spec) is over a hundred bucks on my vehicles

plus a filter is another 20-30 bucks

so I cannot find someone to do it for a 100 bucks

and it's not so much about not affording to pay someone to do it, but why, when I can do it myself

I can pay someone to change my summer to winter tires/rims as well, but why, when again I can do this myself and use the cash on better things, booze and cigars......

.

It's always better to do stuff yourself if you can. Besides obviously saving you money I believe it keeps you more grounded in reality.

The magical 15k oil change... What a joke

Its kinda funny that a 15k interval became ok once manufacturers started offering 'free maintenance' programs.

I wouldn't do it on a car I intended to keep after warranty, thats for sure.

Btw I'm talking about the ridiculous 15,000 MILE oil change schedule some Germans (and others?) are advocating.

Even 15,000km is a frickin stretch to me. 10k tops, on synthetic, if you want the engine to last.

Dunno, there are hordes of people running 15k+. In general europe has a longer oil change interval. I ran my old audi to 20-25K and I put over 200K on it up to 4000K. On the other hand the newer turbo audis have big issues down the line with 15K intervals.

I know several BMWs (M3, M5) have rod bearing issues and major VANOS problems, I'd easily attribute both to dirty oil. The 15k mile interval seems ludicrous to me. I believe their intervals were much shorter until they began the free maintenance program. I suppose they figured at 15k oil changes, the engine will easily last to 100-150k warranty period. After that they probably don't give a damn.

I'm thinking that if you actually feel grit in your oil, you've waited far too long to change it. I don't think I've ever felt grit in my car oil. With motorcycles running wet clutches it's a bit different, but in a car? Doesn't sound right. It must be black and nasty looking by the time you're feeling any physical grit in it.... probably long past the effective point of life.

Cool story up. Bro runs 60 weight in Shovel and Iron Sporty. When done he puts it in the car.

My last Sprinter's oil change interval was 16k km's. It went over 300k no problems.

My new one's interval is 30k. I don't anticipate any oil related issues.

More cool story. Back in the '80's my brother had a straight 6 powered Chevy van. At work they had a drum of some magical motor oil for the fleet. For giggles he put it the old van with intent to never change it again. He never did.

My last VW TDI had a specified change interval of 16k km but required the use of a specific oil. Did that - No issues - Sold the car at 430,000 km. Car had issues at the time of sale (Clutch, broken front spring, leaking EGR) but none related to engine internals.

Current car is also a M-B product - they are pretty specific about the type of oil they want you to use (your Sprinter should also require a specific oil). I'm pretty sure that if you follow the specified change interval using the oil that they want you to use, it won't be a problem. The people who will get in trouble are those who buy the cheapest 5w30 oil on sale at Walmart and then attempt to go the specified change interval. And there are plenty of people like that.

I'm sure you're more qualified to make these claims then the engineers but I'll stick to what the manual says
