Buying brand new motorcycle

If you are a bigger, heavier guy you may want a 500cc bike or a 650cc.
You are old enough to get good insurance rates. State Farm is not the best unless you have a super sport which you are not planning to get. For example for a 650cc bike, with a car and house discount I'm paying $500 a year, live in Mississauga. Without discounts, would be around $700-750.

I would advise against buying a motorcycle, thinking you'll be keeping it for a predetermined amount of time. It rarely happens.

You could get a used Ninja 500 for $1,500. ... Or an SV650 for around $2,000.

Nothing wrong with buying new but I'd save that for a bike I really want not a beginner one.

I too highly suggest buying something used for your first bike. My first bike was an EX250 and before the end of summer I was bored of it and itching to move into another bike. Just have it checked before purchasing. Good luck and welcome to riding in Canada.

Thanks for the advice. But I am not planing so far to change bike by end of this season. And I only live in Canada 7-8 months out of the whole year and spend cold time abroad on the beach:) Because of that I am limited on finances and I want to make 1 purchase that will last me 3 years. And pay as cheap insurance as possible.
I have small bike that I own abroad too. So I am not complete rookie. Not sure if 250 will be enough.
The problem is that the only used 300cc I can get is 2013 ninja300 or 2013 cbr300 and price is not much cheaper compare to brand new.

Ninja 300 used is worth no more then 4k, people who list it more are dreaming and they will come to their senses when they realized they can't sell it. My friend bought one last year for 3500 mint condition used, you have to look to buy outside the main area of Toronto, try montreal or closer to there.

Out the door brand new you are looking at about 7k. 8-10k if you finance and buy warranty. (I don't know why people buy warranties when they usually end up selling the bike within a year).

I was looking at ads everywhere but I didn't see any used ninja300 for $3500. They are all 4500 and more. I will try to go to VOS and see if I can get pdi and freight off then maybe i will buy new r3 today.

Ok so I went out to VOS and they refused to remove freight and PDI so I called and then drove to Brantford and paid deposit for my new Yamaha R3. Price is $4999.99 plus HST and $38.50 for licencing. No more fees. I will pick it up in 2 weeks. So excited to ride it soon!

If you haven't been able to save the money to buy a bike cash, what makes you believe you will be able to save money to pay your line of credit?

None of my business, just curious.
Thanks for fast replies guys.
By the way other fees before tax in VOS Motors they told me $250 for pdi plus $140 freight. so in total with tax estimated price before plates will be $6089.57.
In Snow City in Scarborough they said their pdi and freight is $450.
I wonder can I knock off pdi fee plus another couple hundred or am I just dreaming?
About financing.. I actually have no cash now but I have big line of credit at 6%. I can just pay cash and then pay my debt to line of credit. But concidering I have a good credit I can probably get 2.9% from Yamaha.
But will it help to bring total price down if I just pay cash? In this case I will use my line of credit.

Please educate us and post the law that makes these fees illegal in Ontario.

Here is the details. Basically whatever the sticker price is, is the price they can charge + tax, if they list it for $6k, then it will be $6k + HST, nothing more. if they want to charge the PDI and Freight, they have to include the pricing within the $6k advertise price.

Some dealerships like to charge beyond what the price is listed for online adding more fees that don't exist, such as inflated pdi charges or something making it more then the advertise price online.

PDI and Freight charges are NOT illegal which is what you stated. If you read it properly they must include these charges in the "Advertised price" a sticker on the windshield is NOT an "advertised price". But I digress.

Again the regulations are poorly written, which is why even in ads the dealers will put vehicle XXXX is "starting at" 18,999.99. Then they include an asterisk which matches the ads fine print that says plus "applicable fees and taxes" Sometimes they will list the amount of the PDI and frieght.

So in the end your statement that a dealer is a "scammer" and that PDI and frieght charges are ILLEGAL is false and misleading. It is legal for a dealership to charge PDI and frieght charges.

Now the fee I do have an issue with is the "Admin" fee. A dealer said they were charging me $200 Admin fee to cover writing up the deal, sending someone to get plates. I said that is part of your costs you doing business. I am not paying it. The GM said it is dealership policy everyone pays it. I said good I don't have to follow "your rules" I will go elsewhere to spend my money. They waived the fee as I was walking to the door.

+11

VOS is also a Yamaha dealer but looks like they prefer not to bother with making a sale if they do not get all money they want. Brantford Motorcycle was different. They want more volume. I saved about $460 for going to Brantford.
Also I decided not to do financing because there is a financing fee about $300. I will just pay off my line of credit fast and whole cost of borrowing will be within $100.
