great car technology

Yet another thing to break down. Cars are overloaded with gizmos already.

I really have no issue seeing bikes and bicycles when I drive.

Some new cars have horrible blind spots, fix that instead.

I can also see this tech being super annoying.

Automotive safety design is on a treadmill now and can't get off. To be safer with each new generation, the unibodies have to bulk up to stay compliant and competitive. More airbags, bigger airbags need more space. Thicker roof pillars, smaller windows. So the gizmos will keep coming until they replace us and create a new golden age of motorcycling. Well, golden for the smart riders. Squids will continue to grace accident scenes regardless of the robotic drivers.

The elanra A-pillars are terrible. I almost made a left from a stop when a car was coming, as I simply did not see it. I got used to it now, but still dangerous. I guess it's the A-pillar airbags that are to blame.

After awhile you get numb to all those beepers, and warning signals and you don't even react when there's a problem.

WOW! Amazing technology! Big thanks to Jaguar! Anything that makes the roads safer for us, gets my vote!

but if all cars have this "shoulder tap" alert, what oh what will the loud pipes save lives crowd do?
lol, maybe make the alert sound like a Harley with open pipes?

I'm so glad I don't need to look at what I'm doing behind the wheel any more. Thank you auto companies, your coddling of inattentive drivers surely could never have any detrimental effect.

Volvo holds the distinction of developing some safest car in the world .They also have technology of detecting pedestrian & cyclist so as to avoid any fatal accidents in case of emergencies .Its good to know that company like Jaguar is also working on this safety feature. It would be very nice to see road becoming more safer for two wheeler rider.

Every piece of technology, that keeps some **** head who hasn't transitioned very well from the wooden cart to the Camry, from clobbering some poor ****er on a bike, is a good thing.

They should implement a 'tap' from the headrest when the driver takes a hand of the wheel and eyes off the outside (i.e. distracted). Can call this the 'D=ASTTH' system (distracted = a slap to the head).

How do you suggest people do shoulder checks then?
And how do you do 90 degree turns?

ok im being a smartass here lol

I dont see anything wrong with this technology, it is an aide and should be viewed as such. Shouldnt make the person careless though and rely on it to "see" for him

Not necessarily if it entrenches a driver's inattentive behaviour. Then he comes up to a situation where he's not paying attention and the car isn't designed to alert him or bail him out, then BAM. Dead biker.

True. I observe many more drivers these days driving with no lights at night now that most cars have 'automatic' headlight controls.

I don't think that's a problem with automatic headlights. It's because the dashboard lights up day an night, regardless of the position of the headlight switch. My guess is having the dash lights on helps the car look better during a test drive, but keeping the outside lights off improves fuel efficiency. So in well-lit urban areas people don't realize their head/taillights are off, they just have the little warning light telling them their DRLs are on. But since they can see everything they don't even think about their lights.

As far as I can tell this is a problem of design on the part of manufacturers, the same carelessness that got Toyota into trouble for unintended acceleration. It must have cost a few lives already.

Many of these devices are allowing people to divest themselves of responsibility for problems; people should be paying more attention. The technology I feel is actually helpful and should be added to all cars is the cross-traffic assist that allows you to stick the nose of your car out (a little) in situations where you can't see and determine if it's safe to continue.

+1.....
what did we do 30 yr ago ?........ we paid ****in attention to were we were going. and read, UNDERSTOOD and respected the rules of the road.

I've had a couple iffy situations since I got my Outlander because of the width of the pillars on either side of the windshield. It also came with those rain cover things on the windows which also makes the pillars wider. Just gotta be more careful now, I guess.

Nice technology but just something else to break and make drivers unable to actually drive without a pile of nanny devices keeping them safe.

Bring on the true saviour, auto-driving cars.

Providing humans with tools to make them safer only serves to heal the symptoms, not address the root of the problem. Take control out of the hands of the meat sack behind the wheel, and you won't need so many damn preventative measures.

You can lead a horse to water, and all that jazz.
