When did ABS become mandatory in Canada?

Whenever the ABS kicked in on my 2009 WRX it just meant the thing was never going to actually stop.

My current DD has no ABS. I've done a winter in it. It was pretty mild as far as snow goes that winter, though.

In my 2001 Jetta I had years ago I could just let the ABS do it's thing and it would stop well. I'm not sure what was up with the WRX that the ABS would make it never stop.

I know they're was a recall on my 02 wrx. Braking over bumps it would kick in. I never had an issue in the snow though.

I personally hate ABS when it's not adjustable at all. Lowest common denominator wins again. Because some people are not good drivers, everyone is forced to buy features that some people may need.
Also, yet another thing to fix or replace - wheel speed sensors.

how long before all those Blind spot, early collision, rear-end sensors become mandatory safety features because people can't look up from their phones long enough to hit the brakes?

It's coming. There should be a stupid test at the mto. If you fail you're doomed to the slow lane and a self driving car for eternity. 90% of Toronto would be in one and the roads would be safer.

I had a rental subaru with their new stupid camera system. I was in the left lane with cruise engaged heading towards a left hand corner, the cameras saw a slow moving tractor trailer in the right hand land and determined that there was impending collision. The car slammed on the brakes (120 km/h to 50 km/h before I could disable the stupid thing). POS. I tried pressing the gas pedal, nothing, it had disabled that, I had to disable cruise to convince it to give me back control. The idea isn't terrible, but the implementation is downright dangerous. Thankfully there was nobody behind me because they wouldn't have expected such an idiotic manoeuvre.

bad enough Manual transmissions are going the way of the Dodo, now there's camera's in the passenger mirror to tell you if there's something in your blindspot. How did people ever reverse their cars without a backup camera? must have been magic.

My boss at work bought a 2015 Corolla. Had to pay EXTRA to get manual transmission.

Is it on by default?
Yes. Subaru EyeSight. Test drove a CrossTrek with it this past Spring. Didn't like it at all. Apparently some reviews state it has a hard time with snow-covered roads, since it relies on the painted line for lane departure warnings. Can be disabled by pressing a button but wouldn't be worth the additional cost for me.

My dash cam has a Lane Departure Warning system in it. It does rely on the painted lines. It also takes a bit to calibrate itself. It does work if you drift out of your lane (beeps and takes a picture) but it also does the same thing for a proper lane change (passing). I haven't tried it in snow yet. Im guessing the built in systems have some smarts to them (have to signal a lane change???) but there are too many variables for me to trust them.
