Great way to destroy what is left of the Canadian auto industry. If the workers are stupid enough to vote for this. They already make the same wages without paying dues and having ridiculous union rules.

I know several employees at Cambridge and Woodstock. None of them are for this and they say the majority seem against it. A union in there now would ruin it for sure.

But...But.....that's not what unifor is saying in the media. Longer hours lower wages, they gotta protest!

I know several employees working there as well. All against this.

I know 2 people that work at the plant in Woodstock. One is very lazy and wants this the other is just an average Joe and he's against it he says most people he talks to are. Not saying that everyone who wants it is a Bad worker im sure some have some actual issues with employment but my understanding is that Toyota has always been a fair employer for the most part that is after all part of Japanese culture. I think if it passed the future of the plants will be less certain.

American automakers closing up shops all over the continent and laying people off.....and Toyota seems to have done fine by moving shops to North America and hiring people. Gotta be a reason why.

Unions upon their inception had workers interests at heart and protected them from many crappy work situations. But let's face it-those situations don't exist in todays workplace anymore, and unions are doing more financial harm than they are good.

I wouldn't vote for union at Toyota. But union has it's place. I belong to a trade union (whoopdeedoo) which is, to me, more of a hiring hall to staff bigger jobs. We pay dues but have no protection. I'm ok with that.

Regarding your last sentence: I'm seeing a lot of evidence to the contrary. eg, my buddy just got hired on to a long established construction company as general labour. But he's good with tools (no license) so he's doing much more than labour. $13hr. He was hoping for $15-$17. What is that?

Is his pay bing withheld so that he completes unpaid overtime? Is he working in extremely dangerous conditions without proper training or equipment? If he gets injured on the Job is he being fired without the proper severance or coverage? There are allot more reasons that unions were created than just money most don't exist like they used to in Canada(I wont say completely absent tho). If he feels he is doing more than his position he is free to negotiate with his employer for more money or a better position probably without the treat of being fired (although its always possible his boss is a ******).

He's only had one paycheque so far. Time will tell how this shakes out. There's a core group of guys working at that company but otherwise the turn over is significant. He's 55, hasn't worked in over 2 yrs. The company can smell blood.

don't underestimate the collective power of a group of people that claim they don't want a union, Oakville hospital just voted one in for RN's after being the last holdout for years. "nobody" wanted it and none claim to have voted yes, but there it is. I'm neither pro nor anti union, but in places like Toyota and such I don't really see the need, but I don't work there.

An unfortunate reality of free market employment if there was a shortage of semi skilled people his job would demand more money.

Pensions and healthcare?

Well that's the thing, isn't it. There is no room for fair play. Why leave money on the table? If you have power, use it. Grind people into the ground. We're number 1. There's a reason unions started in the first place and that reason is coming around again. Will the people in China, India and Bangledesh accept the normal pay and standards forever? I don't think so.

Thats why work is going to other places like veitnam. The Knowledge worker has taken over where the manual labourer has left off.

Why are you saying this? I will be visiting my favourite welder this week. He is not in Vietnam. He will do for me something a dozen other people can do. He will charge me a very reasonable rate. I will recognize the value of the work. Whatever he asks, I will pay him more. I hate that I'm an anomaly. I will shut up now.
