RIM was one of the early adopters of the 7" tablet form.
Isn't Apple and everybody else coming out with one now?
From day 1, as nice as the iPad is, I've always felt it was too big, bulky and unwieldy. A laptop makes so much more sense when needing a screen of that size.
The 7" screen is ideal and adequate. And if Apple can do $199 for a 7" version, they will destroy the market. Heck, I'd even consider one.

Here are a few more beefs I have with iPhones that you can add to your list;
- They have mass
- Won't wash the dishes
- Can't fit 50 of them in my back pocket
- Require electricity to operate
- They don't bounce like basketballs
Palm OS is the way to go!
You'd think it would be a given, the smaller and more powerful we want our electronics to be, the less DIY friendly they're going to be. No news here.
You can only fit x number of components that cannot be made any smaller so many ways inside a smaller casing before you start trying to figure out ways to cut out unnecessary parts consuming space.

Been using a scrapped 3GS that I rebuilt. I use my phones mainly for GPS stuff. The 3GS is quite impressive. It gets a good signal in on trails with trees and bush. My gf's 4S is even better. Gets a solid 5M lock and scrolls very fast through Garmin Onboard maps. I was going to go for a 4S too, but I am really starting to HATE itunes and everything related to it. The phone backup system is retarded, music management is a hassle and the reminders system fails to get the point across. Unlocking them for any carrier can be an issue.
I recently played a bit with a friend's galaxy nexus. Not as smooth as the iPhone stock iphone, but a lot better than an iphone with cydia stuff to improve the UI notifications and reminders. How's the GPS on it, especially with trees around? I read it has a barometer, which helps the gps. That's quite awesome.

The Samsungs ROCK, you can install a better ROM too.
The best thing is NOT needing a pc to add music to your phone.
Apple binds you to itunes.
Android phone just copy and paste, done
You don't even need to connect to a pc to add files.
Since you hike, having the ability to add another battery easily might be a good thing for you too.
