Why we need a minimum wage hike......

The Argument for Obama’s $10.10 Minimum Wage Hike, Explained in Dialogue Form:

Worker: “Hi, I’d like to work for you.”

Employer: “Sorry, the government says we have to pay everyone at least 10.10 an hour. We don’t have any money in our budget to hire more workers at that rate.”

Worker: “Well, I still need a job. I’ll gladly work for 6 dollars an hour. Deal?”

Government: “Hold on! You can’t do that. You’re not allowed to sell your services for less than 10.10 an hour!”

Worker: “But… I’d rather make under 10.10 than be unemployed. Why can’t I enter into a private employment contract with this establishment if we both feel that the arrangement benefits us? We are both consenting parties, aren’t we?”

Government: “Because that isn’t fair.”

Employer: ”Excuse me, but I’d like to have a say in this conversa-”

Government: “Enough out of you, business owner! This is between me and the worker.”

Employer: ”Actually, I really think you have nothing to do with-”

Government: “FAIRNESS! We are decreeing a minimum amount that all people must be paid, regardless of the financial realities of an individual business, and regardless of the actual measurable worth a particular worker represents. If a worker wants to work for less rather than not work at all, we won’t allow it. We are doing this because of fairness and freedom. WHAT DON’T YOU PEOPLE UNDERSTAND ABOUT THIS?”

Worker: ”Well, if I can’t work than I guess I’ll have to start selling my stuff. Anybody want to buy my TV for 100 dollars?”

Buyer: “Awesome! I’ll take it!”

Government: “WAIT! You aren’t selling that thing for less than 200 dollars. This is for your sake. You deserve 200 dollars for that TV.”

Worker: “But nobody will buy it for that much and I really don’t think it’s worth 200 dollars…”

Government: ”Look, just take some of this welfare until a high paying job falls out of the sky and lands on you like an Asteroid of Fairness from the Kumbaya Galaxy.”

Taxpayers: “Hang on, we can’t afford to finance any more entitlements! We’re barely making ends meet as it is!”

Government: ”Well, you’ll have to get a second job to compensate for the financial burden of a trillion dollar Nanny State.”

Taxpayers: “Fine. Hi, employer, I’d like to work for you.”

Employer: “Sorry, can’t afford to hire more workers at 10.10 an hour.”

Taxpayers: “Alright, this is a supplemental income anyway. I’ll work for less. How ’bout 7 dollars an hour? Deal?”

Government: “WAIT.”

Lol.

So, you're arguing in favour of not raising minimum wage (to keep pace with inflation at minimum)?

Some Republicans in the US are suggesting a lower or to get rid of a minimum wage.

Are you in favour of this too?

And to think.. if the US or Canadian gov't could do things even sorta kinda remotely right we could have a minimum wage of $18/hr and all the social services anyone could want.

Too bad they're incompetent.

Sounds like a magical imagination land ive heard of... on the OTHER side of the world.

All that sounds like republican ********, completely missing the point as always those guys. They are the worse cancer this world has

Some people propose a $14 minimum wage, lolz. Weren't we in a depression recently?

So certain loud groups in Ontario want to force minimum wage to $14. Not even 3 years ago the minimum wage was raised to $10.25. Even if we were to follow the mantra of 3% Cost of living adjustment thats an adjustment to $11.20 over the last 3 years...so where is $14 dollars coming from?

Where is the mandatory salary and wage increases for those who arent minimum wage? Raising the minimum wage will do nothing but dilute the power of the dollar and make YOUR money worth less.

Did YOU get a 3% increase every year while doing the same job?

Nothing but smoke and mirrors while the elephant sneaks through the backdoor.

it came from rocker guy. He said so, so it must be true. Like the depression we just came through.

Yes to all. You want to do better? Work harder and work smarter. Incentivizing lazy workers is not the solution to the problems we/they have.

Rather than spewing an emotional response, Please identify the logic flaw in the dialog.

P.S. The Dems are currently running the bus over the cliff, not the Pubs.

This argument is so true. I hire people for minimum wage and when business is slow it's hard to maintain the hours for employees. Some industries are very competitive and they might not operate on volume. Especially a small business who competes with the big boys can't afford to raise his prices when the suppliers raise prices on him or her.

If the minimum wage was the same here as it was in US I would be able to employ atleast 2 more people per day which would be about 4 people (full time and 2 part time) for the week. I want to be able to employ 4 more people, but the sad story is I can't because minimum wage is higher and our prices haven't gone up proportionately for the last few years.

Also, don't forget right now we match cpp payments and pay 1.4% for ei and for me it's 1.68% WSIB

So if the employee pays $100 in EI we pay $140 and they pay cpp for $200 we have to pay $200 and if the gross payroll is $14,000 for that cycle we have to pay $235.20. Small businesses can't afford such costs. There have to be special concessions made for small businesses and they should be allowed to pay a much lesser fee than their corporate competitors.

In the supernatural thread that changed into a philosophy of life discussion, I suggested that much of what happens to a person in their life is due to blind luck, starting with what kind of family a baby is born into. Later on in life, getting a job may be less due to the strength of a resume than due to connections your relatives have, or if you happened to choose the skill training that came into or out of demand when you were making that choice out of high school with no real world clue. You could be hard working and smart but still need to be in the right place at the right time in order to get ahead. This is heavily influenced by blind luck.

IMO, most people who struggle financially, are where they are due to simple bad luck. Or they suffer from mental or physical illness. (Cancer just pops up out of nowhere and wrecks financial havoc as well as taking away ones health.) Now of course there are those who are just stupid and lazy and don't have the willingness to work hard, but these are in the minority IMO. (No statistics available, just opinion.)

my point is, those of us who are lucky enough to be comfortable, should have the social conscience and responsibility to ensure that those not as lucky can earn a basic living with a minimum wage that permits them to live above the poverty line.

Those people whose attitude is: I'm working hard and I'm doing okay, so fcuk those who are less fortunate, are just being selfish. That's the issue I have with canadian Conservatives and American Republicans. I'm okay with the government taking some of my comfortable earned wage and helping those who need it. Do I wish there was less government waste? Yes, of course!

When I see a homeless person, I think of this saying: There, but for the grace of God, go I.

blind luck/grace of god, depending if one is an atheist or not

Sure dude. People didn't lose their jobs and industries did not shut down, it was all an illusion

It wasn't a depression, dude. Words have meanings. Economic "depression" has a certain definition. So no, there wasn't one recently.

You live in Utopia my friend.

A lot of those "less fortunate" are there cuz they want to be there. Gambling, wasting valuable resources on booze, drugs and alcohol. Your definition of people who are struggling financially is a far minority to people who simply cant or wont try harder, work harder or manage their resources better.

It takes all the incentive out from working hard if i can do bare minimum knowing that someone will be out there to provide for me.

I worked hard, i went to school, i sacrificed things to get to where i am, and now i have to turn around and share my hard earned wealth with those who didnt want to finish high school, with those who decided college was not for them, or that partying was more important then getting up and going to work. They chose the easy way out, unlike myself and many "lucky to be comfortable" who buckled down, did what had to be done.

I worked for minimum wage and menial labour for a long time and i hung out with these so called "less lucky". I realized my life was going nowhere and did something about it, while they bought latest iphones and toys, indebted themselves up to their heads while planning the next party and "living one day at a time..."

Screw them....

I lived in a Socialist country and in principle it would have worked, but its in our DNA to try and do better than others, and you cannot eliminate greed and competition, it is afterall, the reason that we are here. Limited resources, survival of the fittest. I'm tired of the government trying to eliminate basic human traits.
