Riding Down Under - Tropical Cairns Australia

No riding today ....doing my first Pic&Collect order on Coles website. $50 minimum - not too bad to reach and have 59 Liters of space.

Watching the Sydney to Hobart race

Like a ride tomorrow as well before the deluge days hit. Can pickup the order at 8 am..bring it home and then take a spin likely to the north or up to Kuranda.

Might be okay for my Hot Springs ride on the 30th but Sat looks better as long as brunch spots open.
Was okay temp today 25 now down to 23 tonight. 28th/29th a write off for riding.

Well the deluge has not arrived just yet but the the severe weather alert has.
Partner should avoid this coming home from Port Douglas but I'm hoping she cancels tomorrow.
180 mm = 7" of rainfall in 6 hours. 100-120 is 3.9 to 4.7 in 6 hours.
for reference
These records were observed in downtown Toronto and go back to 1847. During that time the heaviest downpour measured for a single day was 98.6 millimetres (3.88 inches) on July 27, 1897.
and you got
1.93 " on Jan 2020.
Meanwhile a trend here for increasingly high 6 hour falls.

Issued at 11:01 am Tuesday, 28 December 2021.

Monsoonal rain and squalls forecast to impact the tropics from early Wednesday morning.
1640662031122.png
Weather Situation: A strengthening monsoon trough currently extends from a tropical low over the Top End of the Northern Territory through the Gulf of Carpentaria and over the base of Cape York Peninsula. The tropical low is forecast to move into the Gulf of Carpentaria late today and towards the eastern Gulf Country district during Wednesday.
HEAVY RAINFALL which may lead to flash flooding is forecast for areas southwest of Old Mapoon to Lockhart River from early Wednesday morning. Six-hourly rainfall totals between 100 to 120 mm are possible. Locally heavier falls up to 180 mm are also possible over coastal communities about the Gulf coast and may also develop about the east coast north of Port Douglas.
DAMAGING WIND GUSTS, with peak gusts of around 100 km/h are forecast to develop over areas north of about Kowanyama from sunrise on Wednesday and spread eastwards across the northern Peninsula during the day. Locally DESTRUCTIVE WIND GUSTS, with peak gusts in excess of 125 km/h are also possible with thunderstorms. A separate Severe Thunderstorm Warning will be issued if very dangerous storms are detected.
A Flood Watch is also current for parts of the Gulf Country, Cape York Peninsula and North Tropical Coast catchments. For more information on weather warnings in Queensland, refer to http://www.bom.gov.au/qld/warnings/.
Locations which may be affected include Georgetown, Port Douglas, Lockhart River, Weipa, Hope Vale and Napranum.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services advises that people should:
* Move your car under cover or away from trees.
* Secure loose outdoor items.
* Seek shelter, preferably indoors and never under trees.
* Beware of fallen trees and powerlines.
* Never drive, walk or ride through flood waters. If it's flooded, forget it.
* Keep clear of creeks and storm drains.
* For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132 500.

The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 pm AEST Tuesday.

We are used to heavy rainfall here and city is prepped for it but there are limits and everytime I ride up on the tablelands these are everywhere including to the south as well tho most of the problem areas are bridged better than even 10 years ago..
COMBINATION TRAFFIC SIGN WITH STATIC /DYNAMIC MESSAGES (LOAD LIMIT SIGN-MT MOLLOY)

Even experienced residents get trapped by rapid rises and need to be helicoptered off every year.

Monitoring the weather and the Sydney - Hobart Ocean Race which is in closing stage.

600 + nautical miles of open ocean racing ...about 1/3 dropped out last night as weather was crazy.
Incredibly 10 competitors are two-handers.....crew of two !!
The four below are photographed as the leave Sydney Harbour. Those four are still in the lead group tho the smaller Stefan is 50 miles back - it still can win due to handicapping.
The pink boat below - Stefan Racing hit 29 knots last night....insane speed in open ocean.
Black Jack the boat to the left of Stefan is in the lead with 10 mile gap and 30 miles to go but the last bit is in a river with notoriously variable winds.
syho21af_0021.jpg

Going to be a serious scrap for second tho they could all jam up in the river.

Tracker says Black Jack the winner.

Yikers
Kowanyama recorded 235mm
Not near us but coming our way. It's been raining moderately for the last 24 hours with some breaks....solar hot water heater isn't. Will have to kick the booster on.Partner not working tomorrow which is good. Dog and I watched movies and I worked.
Based on a true story ...very enjoyable

Not bad ...not sure how historically accurate but perhaps better balance than most.

Bit of WWII history I was only vaguely aware of. Dark and moody and the best depiction of the Market Garden gliders even tho it is peripheral to the stories. Gritty in the sense of war is ****** all around with no redeeming virtue. The Canadians landings in Zeeland feature but these are individual soldiers and civilian stories within the pending liberation of Holland. Still not finished but recommended if you like historically accurate war movies.

Rain gone and a rare tropical sunset. Usually the sun drops so fast there is little sunset time. Tonight got lucky with the clouds and clear to the west

Got my steak pie fix at the bowls club. Will ride to Innot Hot Springs tomorrow.
Coffee and mint choco icecream for dessert at home. :coffee:

Australia does it up with fireworks in Sydney. 2 hours to go here in Cairns...we are nicely tucked in bed and will be asleep. Boring oldsters.

must be morning the kookaburras are announcing 2022.
at least we dodged the cyclone forming up South of us. The usual crisis start to a new year for some.

It's clear tho not so cool as yesterday ..will get a small morning ride in chasing a dam photo for stromtrooper contest plus another grocery pick up. I got a decent photo yesterday of the Tinaroo dam but maybe the Barron will be more photogenic. The burger was good tho and just superb weather post rain. Happy New Year from 2022.

Well have to line up lots of movies....self isolation until partners PCR test comes back negative. Glad I got a little ride to Kuranda and a grocery pick up today. Grounded now for 7 days and we've split the house up as Jude is the potential infected..
Not a big deal as I sleep on the deck nights when I'm working and I like out here. Bug screened but otherwise wide open to airflow and wildlife sounds.
Jude has planted rain forest trees and plants years ago.Screen Shot 2022-01-01 at Jan, 1 2022 6.22.24 PM.jpg
Streetview is nicely uptodate. Google Earth not so much. Hated that gravel drive for turning the bike around. Now nicely paved and electric gate. My work area and current sleeping area is top right corner (below ) with the overhanging tree. Open mesh in all directions for airflow including up through the hardwood floor. It's how Queenslanders were designed way back before air conditioning and works the charm. The bedrooms are individually a/c but the main master/ensuite is also screened with California shutters and wide open to airflow plus a high tech fan....we might put ac on for 20 min around 6-7pm to flush the heat out.
The most inside bedroom is Jude's cello practice area and cyclone refuge. It's the only one with no windows.
Screen Shot 2022-01-01 at Jan, 1 2022 6.29.07 PM.jpg

Tire pressure holding nicely ...might top up a bit and oil is holding as well. Since I'm grounded will get it up on the paddock stand and check chain etc.

Well the weather is making my "no riding" for a week a bit more bearable. Upper thirties is a bit too much even with good airflow.

It was horrendous earlier today but a Tstorm finally broke....imgres.png

Was writing this for another forum and figured in might be of interest and one reason Australia is such an immigration magnet. It cost me about $11,000 just to apply and took 3 years ( usually 2 ) with no guarantee I would be accepted tho with a partner there and a long history they were confident I would be. It's way easier for people under 35 and there is a huge exchange of student workers between Aus and Canada.

In Australia we have a policy that requires any business of any size that employs people to deduct from their pay 5-8% of their wages toward a super-annuation fund that travels with the person for their working career.
In addition the employer must add I think 9% on top of the employee contribution.

That's policy that blunts the ability of corporation or other predatory organizations to exploit workers.
Tied up with a high minimum wage. $20.33 per hour it allows even the more menial job workers to earn a living wage and put aside aside a good chunk for retirement as my partner did.

Superannuation follows a worker through out their working career and even after to the point where partner is adding to it even post retirement taking a temp hospitality job at $28 an hour ( and more for holiday pay ).

Australians don't as a rule tip which prevents abuses in hospitality industry. People know their server is well compensated and only exceptional service might warrant a tip where elsewhere it might mean the difference in feeding the kids that night ....and is often added....up to 20% on a bill even if the service is shite. Some employers abuse that as well not paying the tips through to the server. In Cuba tips ( lifesavers) were pooled for all hotel staff so even the invisible work staff benefitted.
It is not a method of compensating workers tho....for Cuba was a vital source of tourist dollars.

Even agricultural work here is well paid
The average agriculture salary in Australia is $93,250 per year or $47.82 per hour. Entry-level positions start at $79,500 per year, while most experienced workers make up to $141,231 per year.
even backpackers who are on a working holiday are well compensated.
The average backpacker salary in Australia is $57,200 per year or $29.33 per hour. Entry-level positions start at $42,656 per year, while most experienced workers make up to $92,430 per year
The total fund is over $3 trillion and cannot be accessed by gov wonks or by corporations as too often happens.

So the responsibility is shared .......a mid frontline medical worker can come out with a $600k fund after 30 years to help retirement....and if the situation warrants it then also a modest pension is available.

Canada sort of sits between the far more socialist structure in Australia and the predatory climate in the US.
Throw in slightly better than Canada medicare for all and it's one reason demand is very high to immigrate to Aus.

Tstorms trying at least ...Screen Shot 2022-01-02 at Jan, 2 2022 5.18.28 PM.jpg
But not cooling the air much. Still 30 feels like 36 😓 at 5.30 pm Finally it let loose and a much cooler breeze.(y)

Very interesting post. Thanks.

My daughter is leaving for Australia in 3 weeks on a one year working visa. Possibly two years. Job already lined up.
We may have to come down for a visit if she stays for two years. A bike rental will be a must for a time while I'm there☺️

Excellent (y) ...there is horrendous shortage of labour in some areas. Where is she located?

You'll adapt to opposite side of the road riding. My trick is keeping my shifter to the curb.
It's okay when there are other vehicles around but there have been a few ..ahem ..."interesting" errors on my part when there isn't......with 3 million tourists normally in the Cairns area.....roads are really well marked and local drivers used to the odd face plant by them.

Hope covid does not put a dent in her plans ...

Company owns something like 30 restaurants. Her choice of position she wants. Anything from assistant general manager to server. Or bar manager. She's done it all here in TO.
Time split between Melbourne and Sydney. I think she's being put up at a hotel the same company owns. Great opportunity for a 25 year old.

I've driven in the UK on a few trips. Takes me a couple of days to get used to it. Then I'm good.
Easier then driving on the right side in Rome. Not doing that again😧

I had a choice coming down from Switzerland to go to France to the right or left to Italy. I was eating lunch in the car and watched a tourist try to pull out into the traffic....the ******** coming from Italy simply would not let him in. I watched for 20 min and turned right ...he was still there. (n)

Excellent for your daughter tho covid may have some say in it. Good luck.

Found out I can ride ...slight omission by partner. :cautious:
Our T-storm finally arrived solidly and feels much nicer today.

Maybe up to the Hot Springs if the weather permits.

6 pm and cooling down now. 31 feels like 39 but think the weather site is lagging a bit. Turns out I can go out riding - only partner is in isolation and we have split the house and some chores and of course a nurse knows how to disinfect. (y)

Downside tomorrow feels like conditions.
37 °C45 °C
Thats really hot for here. Even if I get out at 6 am it will be 28 and climbing. We'll see.

No ride except to vax centre and a 3 h-4 hour wait in line - last hour in ac and some seating but third shot done.
Screen Shot 2022-01-04 at Jan, 4 2022 5.47.49 PM.jpg
Treated myself to a Meldrums steak pie ...not quite top end but excellent crust and reasonable generous filling. I was very hungry as past my lunch time. Choco shake went down well.

Also picked up a new pair of gloves as mine were flat worn out. Not top end but Aus brand with good rep and some decent armour.

My riding shirt sloshed over the the laundry on it's own ...lost a lot of fluid tho replaced mostly.
