What did you do in your garage today..?

Got my Ice bike moved out to Garden Hill yesterday so I freed up some floor space. This weekend I'm going to buy another Wing and a spare motor........

Next season will be spent entirely in the red zone!!
Does the new wing have a purpose or just a general use bike?

Everyone should own a Goldwing,

I'm on my 3rd.

It's ONLY purpose is donor motor and drive train for the current Dragwing when it gets tired of the red zone.

And @Mad Mike is right, everyone should own one. This is actually Wing purchase number 5.
It's a honda. Unless you keep the throttle open while the valves are floating, you probably can't kill it.

You can find OldWings all day long for around $1k. They are easy to work on, cheap on parts. Once you go through one to update the basic maintenance and you'll have a cheap to insure bike that should go strong for 300k km on basic maintenance.

I wouldn't be afraid to jump on my '75 for a cross country trip.

Not even much to maintain on a Wing. Valve adjustment on the 1000s and 1100s. On my 1200 the only real maintenance I did was change the timing belt and it didn't really even need that ( the original looked just like the replacement).

I took a last ride on Tuesday and backed my ST into its corner in the garage for winter hibernation. It's a bittersweet time of the year that signals the end of riding season for me and the approach of the next ski season. We're supposed to get up to 20cm of snow up here on Sunday and there was snow on the ground yesterday in Alliston, so it's time.

Today, I attempted to change the oil on the Monster, but unfortunately, my bad luck with oil changes continues.

I found some metal shavings on the magnet; two of them were fairly large and circular. Do you have any thoughts on that?

Additionally, during the last oil change I did, I noticed that the drain plug was becoming rounded. A couple of weeks ago, I ordered a new one, expecting to complete the oil change before the snow arrives. However, the magnet on the new plug is broken. I hope that GP Bikes is willing to exchange it, considering it was delivered almost two weeks ago and I just now noticed the issue.

A small amount of filings or metal powder is normal, larger chunks and longer shavings like I see on your plug are greater cause for concern, round slivers are usually coming off rotating parts.

If you can get a magnet up the drain hole (glue a small one to a thin wire) swirl it around to see if there are bigger pieces.

Maybe some Duc experts can chime in.

A few of those bits could be broken or dropped valve collets. Pull the strainer.

Checked over my 3 Honda blowers yesterday, no not that V-3 electric supercharged bike on the show circuit. A 520,720, and the big 724. Let`s hope this winter isn`t a repeat of last year, we got clobbered.

I regularly disect the oil filters after a change to see how much shiny stuff is there. Never seen bits so large. Something inside is not happy.

The IOM museum had a Honda V3 race bike that was only about a 250cc.

Hmmm........ This doesn't look good.

These are ferrous shavings, so not from the aluminum cases.

I'd be checking this out on a Monster forum to see if this has happened to other owners with same bike.

I had pieces similar to what wingboy showed in my Monster and they were from the shifting mechanism. Ran for 10 years later with no issues or shifting problems.

Thanks everyone for all the insights and suggestions. Genuinely appreciate the time you took to share your thoughts.

I’ll put this project on hold until the snow clears and I can get back to working on the bike properly. Once I dig into it again, I’ll post an update in case it’s helpful for anyone else down the road.
Pull the strainer.
Will do that and report back.

Definitely going to do this once the old filter is out.

Thanks. It didn’t cross my mind before. FWIW, here are some of the comments from the Monster group in FB

Do they look like these?
No, sir. They were less round and a bit flatter — I’ll take new photos

Same here, but the ID of those collets @Wingboy shared are the size of valve stems, whereas the shift arm control spring is huge by comparison. It freaked me out when I saw that stuck to my oil drain on one of my oil changes, but those who apprently knew better said not to worry about it. Bike was fine for the next 8 years until I finally had to replace the sprag - once the flywheel was removed, I saw the remaining half of that spring dangling on the shift arm. Very strange, considering that's the one people usually change to fix their "can't find neutral" problem (which I've never had).
