Thanks for the recommendation, watched :
Very nerdy stuff, but interesting history of FX in movie making. The last episode blew me away with the new techniques they are using now with fully realized digital environments while shooting.
I have friends who recently used a digital sound stage in Seattle and they were blown away by what it could do.

So I returned back to this whole Theranos thing with Elizabeth Holmes and watched the HBO version of this.
It uses actual footage of Elizabeth, and shows the devices etc.
What was crazy was her voice, I read about how she had this deep voice, but all I could think about, she sounded like Romy...from this
:ROFLMAO: A classic movie if you haven't watched it.

My nephew worked at Skywalker Ranch and was allowed to bring me in as a guest to tour the facilities. We watched as they were recording the sound effects to Toy Story 2. You know how high tech that was? It was 2 people in a room that resembled a squash court, with all sorts of stuff just lying around and attached to the walls. They were doing the scene where the horse gallops around the corner and bumps into the door. It took about three takes trying different objects, and they settled on a couple of wooden blocks for the trotting, and cupboard door being slammed. It was pretty cool to watch the process, as I always assumed they were synthesized sound effects.

Sometimes they'll use pre-recorded sound effects, but foley is still a very alive and kicking art form.

Just finished the Dahmer docu-drama on Netflix. Really well done, and creatively told. Disturbing AF...but as they say, truth is stranger than fiction.

I was watching that series, yes very well done. But I just found the guy to be just an f'up creep, kinda sickening, and turned it off.
Felt my attenion should be put elsewhere.

I get that 100%.

Curiously, I found the most violent scene to be Dahmer’s bludgeoning at the hands of a fellow inmate. Live by the sword etc.

Liking rings of power a lot more than house of dragon.
house of dragon is not as good as GOT, which had better actors and a more interesting plot

Same feeling but it’s still pretty good. Can’t bring myself to watch Rings of Power. I think I Tolkiened myself out as a kid.

Technically, while based on J.R.R.’s world, it’s not a Tolkien work.
;)
But I get what you are saying.

No dress rehearsal. This is our life.

Took me as many starts to read LOTR as it did to read Dune. The Hobbit was a breeze.

Not sure if it's been mentioned here or not, as I can't search for it, but we just binged "Mo" on Netflix, and it was amazing.

It's by stand-up comedian Mo Amer, and is a fictionalisation of his life in Houston trying to get by while his immigration paperwork is on eternal hold. Equal parts hilarious and heartbreaking, it's really well done. Episodes are relatively short (~30 min), so it's easy to jump in and out.

the Tolkien purists are also having a hard time watching it because they just can't seem to remember that Prime doesn't have the rights to anything but Lord of the Rings and the appendices. I'm on a board where people keep referencing The Silmarillion and various letters by Tolkien saying, "That never happened", or, "That's not what happened in...." In short they are hate watching it, so that they can whine about stuff that doesn't track with what's in ALL of the stuff that Tolkien wrote.

The Hobbit was boaring AF. So much foreshadowing and leading up to the thing will happen, it was a slog, just get to the thing which will happen... I had to read another book afterwards just to remember what a good read was. It wasn't Dune either, I think I only lasted 1/3 on that one, so much wordiness (for lack of expression), the story got lost for me trying to deciper what the heck it all meant. Never bothered with LOTR after the Hobbit.

I quite enjoyed reading both "The Hobbit" and "Dune." The movies for "The Hobbit" were a bloated mess in which they dumped a bunch of garbage, including a non existent love story into what was originally a nice little story. There's an edit that was done by Topher Grace (formerly of "That 70's Show") that cuts the three movies down into a single 2 hour long movie. I really wish that I could see it, but it has apparently only had a single screening. I've only seen a few minutes of the third Hobbit movie and will likely never watch the whole thing.

"Dune" is good if you read it as largely a political thriller, with SciFi overtones. "Dune Messiah" was just OK. After that things started to get rather silly with "Children of Dune" and then downright comical with "God Emperor of Dune." As a result I have never read the last two books that came after that. I very much enjoyed the recent movie and hope that the sequel is (1) as good as the first and (2) the last film that they make in the series.
