Algonquin Park Fall Colours Tour

Yes they are! Beautiful day for a ride but I froze my digits and toes off as I didn’t have heated gear!

Honestly it seems the colours are almost already fading. And there was way more traffic than I excpected!

12hrs and 840km total day for me. Minor mishap where I ran off Dyno Rd as it was going left, but the shadows made it unclear and I went right onto gravel at speed. Managed to hold it up but embarrassing.

Was great to ride with @bigpoppa and I’ll confirm that AT in white is gorgeous!

What @Hardwrkr13 said. It’s also the spot where all the Polish scouts meet. The other side of the road you’ll notice a lot of large camps. Each one is a different group.

Hundreds of kids from 7-20+ go up for 2 weeks every year. That field is where there’s a large gathering at the weekend in the middle where parents come to visit.

Used to be visitation on the middle Sunday but the kids get sad and cranky for days as they remember their home and parents so they cancelled it.

We’re up there every year as we have young cousins in one scout troop. Good tradition and can’t wait to send my kids up. Youngest is still 2 years away from being allowed.

Seeing some of those European camps makes me jealous. A friends kids go to Estonian camp where they have fun and work on the language. Such a cool opportunity.

I thought it was stupid at the time so I didn’t join (was about 13-16). Now seeing some of those that joined I’m kicking myself as they have made lifelong connections and friendships, and are still active in it as leaders.

My kids will be nudged toward it as I think it’s a good learning opportunity and hopefully helps them keep the language and traditions. The oldest is signed up for weekly meetups but he’s still too young.

I used to attend the weekly meet up as well. Even went to the camp one year, in the middle of winter.
Morning routine was a wake up call at 6 am for morning exercises. Stretching and running on Old Barry’s Bay Rd with the sound of packed snow and the silence of the wilderness. It was cold but amazing.
Evening activities were either sitting around a bond fire outside and singing Polish songs or inside around a wood burning fireplace. At the time hot chocolate was the beverage of choice.
I also have friends that were in Scouts and stuck with it for quite some time. I can't remember which year, but there was a huge gathering or Polish scout from all over the world. Huge groups came from Poland and as far as Australia.

I got pulled out of scouts as my parents thought it was a better idea for me to join Lechowia (Polish Folk dancing group along with ballroom dancing). The practices and scout meeting were on the same day of the week so I could not attend both. Did that for a number of years and even perforated at the the Toronto Metro convection center (groups 20th anniversary of existence), Carassauga and even went to Poland for a festival of folk dancing groups from around the world. This worked out well as the performances were in the region where I am from so I performed in the city I lived in as well as others that I group up in with family. It was cool as my family was able to come and watch.
Another year, the group went to China for performances as well as somewhere in South America. Can't remember which country.

Similar as the Scouts, many people stuck around for many years and made life long friendships and some even got married together.

Wow that’s an awesome experience @oioioi and I guess for me the best part of NOT going is I met my wife and have my current family.

All my friends that stuck with scouts actually met their wives there. Each and every one of them married a girl from the scout troop.

I forgot to add, make sure you walk up and see the other side of the monument (gorgeous) and read the info board description of markings. Very interesting.

Tuesday looks like good temps so I’ll head up through Algonquin and do the Renfrew area as colours are always great especially in the Combermere area.

I’m an idiot and didn’t go around at all.

Can you take a photo please when you’re up there? Really curious what is there on that side.

Here are some photos from my trip from May 2022

I went for a ride around the neighborhood. Fortunately, Ottawa is in the middle of a corn field surround by bush and forest.
Will post some pics if they're o.k. and I can get them off the dashcam. After all, who wants to compete with all those parked cars from Toronto. I ended up at the Diefenbunker.

Should be fun.

Hey Mimico - how do you plan/set your route when going riding?
I tried using Google maps but it keeps reverting to its default routes when I send a planned trip from my computer to my phone : (
Not sure if there is a different setting or app one can use for free. I know someone on here mentioned there was a paid app they use for trip planning etc..
