Staying in shape during corona

More people than you know dont like running outdoors. Another big huge enormous aspect of running outdoors that i was completely oblivious to... is women running alone. They get catcalled, they get followed, especially if its a less busy area (which is where you'd wanna run to maintain distancing). Hearing of all the precautions they take (running with keys in their hands as pokes, not running with earbuds, carrying pepper spray) is something ive never thought of even on my 11PM runs by myself.

And then the treadmill is also less harsh on the joints for those people who have these kinds of issues. And its easier to keep pace

Sure resilience is a great thing to build...but some ppl don't give a d@mn and just want to get their workout in ahaha

I'm aware most prefer running on a treadmill, and the majority are doing it because they're mentally weak. But thank you for providing a very rational and realistic reason with regards to women. Sad that some men are pieces of **** to that degree.

Because some people don't care about building up for endurance races, Tough Mudders, ultra marathons or what not.
Safety is a concern. My MIL won't go for walks on her own because she's scared of something happening as she continues to recover from her heart attack.
Treadmill it is for our house.
You don't need to be training for an event to benefit from taking a beating induced by yourself to yourself with increasing intensity as you toughen up. Life is literally a series of being knocked down, getting back up, and doing it all over again. Might as well do it to yourself so you learn how to take it.

But yeah, you're right, some just don't give a **** I guess.

Yeah i was talking to my old coworker who lost basically half her weight it looks like (im exagerrating...but it was a big change)

Anyhow im talking about how she got it done and she explained that she had to get her BF to wake up every morning to ride his bike behind her as she ran to keep the creeps at bay...as she'd encountered some when she'd tried to do it alone in the beginning.

I haven't run on a treadmill in ages... i can't remember the last time i did... maybe for a vo2max test or a gait check... but i cant be bothered to pay for a membership

Why do people insist on treadmills?

I understand in sub-zero temps because ice is a *****, but part of working out is gaining the mental fortitude to understand, accept, and adapt to your failures/weaknesses. Running in really cold or really hot temps builds this. Running in the rain (or even better, rain, hail, then snow all on the same day during Tough Mudder 2013) is even more epic because it feels like I'm ******* Vegeta (will to get stronger) from Dragon Ball Z trying to surpass Goku (actualized state.)

So why do people insist on being a hamster instead of Vegeta? You can run outdoors right now and run the **** away from anyone you see to social distance too! Then the issue w/ gyms being too dumb to get it goes away too.

Now if you're powerlifting.....well, you're ****** unless you get a home gym for now.

It's for specialized training. Those who plan to climb Mt Everest for example would benefit immensely from oxygen deprivation training because that's literally how you'll be breathing.

It's similar to training for an ultra (100km, 100miles, there's no standard but it's insane). Most ultras will involve weather that is meant to **** you. How some ppl train for this is to run with winter jacket on if it's 20 degrees so you stimulate hot-as-**** weather.

Now if ppl are doing this for the hell of it or because it looks cool.....what the **** lol, to each their own!
There is also the other side to that. Some of the gym bunnies I know appreciate the staring in a safe environment. It is motivation for them to keep pushing.

If people really wanted to suffer, they could just go with the marcinko workout system. Every morning outside regardless of weather. Build physical and mental toughness at the same time. Most people aren't that into suffering but they do appreciate the feeling and gains that come from exercise so they go to great lengths to make things as comfortable as possible.

Thanks for the URL. Looks like something I could use in conjunction with what David Goggins' said along with Jordan Peterson's philosophy.

I'll never understand the thing I bolded. I used to frequent a powerlifting gym called Iron Fitness. The place is a literal garage and had an old school feel to it. It was intimidating and everyone was ridiculously strong with the only person weaker than me being a ******* girl who's 1 rep max squat was 235lb.

And I found it inspirational because working out is the literal act of destroying your weakness at a cellular level and forcing them to regrow like a mythological phoenix. It isn't supposed to be comfortable, fun, or relaxing.

....then I moved and go to Goodlife now. There are massage chairs, everything is nice and painted, and I'm still wondering what the **** lol it just doesn't suit the activity. I'm also one of the strongest lifters there (I'm still an ant compared to the beasts I saw at Iron Fitness); I'm thinking there's a strong relationship here between the setting and results!

Damn, I was feeling proud of upping my squats by 20lbs by my fourth set today, but now not so much lol.

I went to Barrie Iron Gym for about 6 months and it was like you described. Definitely made me want to push it more than I did at Goodlife or Fit4less. Now I just have my little notebook of what weights I'm doing to keep pushing me at home.

As for running outside, I find a treadmill is better for pacing myself; that being said I hate running though the thought has crossed my mind these last two months. Before I lived in the boonies I wouldn't even walk with headphones in as I wanted to be able to hear everything around me in case I was going to be harassed/attacked. Sad reality is, it started before I was even old enough to drive a car, so I understand completely why woman would rather use a treadmill at a gym.

**** serious exercise hurts a lot doesn't it!

I've got the solution for you

this actually hasn't aged as well as i'd want it to lol

A huge part of having a treadmill is having dependents at home you can't leave whether it's elderly parents (think alzheimers) or small kids. Crappy roads, too many traffic lights, busy roads, etc are also big reasons.

I loved going to the gym but hated the atmosphere. Meat market, high-school posers sitting around on machines, fashion show, and if you're a stronger guy you know you get more guys than girls staring at you which is annoying ("bro what supps/steroids you take"....etc).
I used to go to a great hardcore gym called Excel Fitness in Pickering. It's a get to work or GTFO kinda place most people won't feel comfortable at. Owner is great as are the people. That's the only gym I miss.

Wife wants a Peloton. The initial cost is one thing but another $49 a month for required programs means that's a no. She's agreed to settle for a lateral trainer elliptical.

In addition to the good points already mentioned, if you suffer from really bad seasonal allergies, a treadmill can keep your running/walking activities going throughout the tough months (May and September).

I know some people use the workouts without having the actual bike. So that's always an option.
Subscription based programs are pretty much the norm now, especially in the cycling world.

Some youtube channels offer workouts for free, where you just follow along. Tons of ways to keep it interesting.

I pay for something (trainerroad) because it just works well with my smart trainer and ive had alright results with it in the past

I've been trying to go at least for walks before the kids wake up...but recently the little one has been up at 5:30am...so my weak brain / motivation is keeping me from waking up earlier :(

Calling folks mentally weak is harsh I would call it more overcoming our built in defense of saving some for the swim back JS.

you sound like you need more Vulcan nerve pinch in your life

my kids were also quite the ordeal to deal with... baby monitor in the basement (with me on the bike) stopping the workout if he started crying...good days.
not.

It's meant to be harsh, but with sympathy and empathy.

I've mentioned this before: I was once really fat. Life itself punishes us on a regular basis and here I was eating 3 McChicken combos for lunch, getting lost in the instant euphoria of shoving fat down my throat, ignoring the fact that I was starting to look like Cartman from South Park; nobody that's fat is unaware that they are fat.

The shame I carried weighed heavier than anything I'll ever lift. I was reminded of it with every step I took, and every time I watched an anime, movie, or TV show where somebody who looked like they took care of themselves would save the world.

And then I got dumped. The super hot 21 year old model (I was 17, so yeah, my ego was appropriately through the roof lol) I was dating told me she found another guy who wasn't fat. And she told me while we were dating. It took a while to sink in....but I realized I'd been cheated on.

Through some sheer miracle I didn't victimize myself. I looked in the mirror and saw a fat piece of **** failing at not only taking care of himself, but in nearly every aspect in life. So I took the shame and guilt I felt for myself and accepted that I deserved every bit of those feelings without remorse or mercy.

It's been a very long time since then. I'm still an ultimately flawed human being. And life has continued to beat the ever living **** out of me. But rather than hiding behind some ******** facade of perfection, hiding my shame of being flawed, I carry my failures and weaknesses close to my heart but as openly as possible. And it ******* pisses me off when people who are clearly bullshitting their weaknesses, who are much older than me, have somehow allowed that ******** to become their identity.

The overweight rate in Canada is around 65%. A small % of those (I think 6% of the 65%? Somebody with a health science background has updated stats, mine are from 2008) have legit genetic deficiencies. The vast majority, however, hide behind a guise of "health issues."

Let me tell you something you already know. The world ain't all sunshine and rainbows. It's a very mean and nasty place, and I don't care how tough you are, it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit as hard as life. But it ain't about how hard you hit. It's about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward; how much you can take and keep moving forward. That's how winning is done! Now, if you know what you're worth, then go out and get what you're worth. But you gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain't where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody. Cowards do that and that ain't you. You're better than that!

I listen to this as my first workout "song" to remind myself to get the **** up and push. I don't deserve mercy, remorse, empathy, or sympathy for being weak because I, like everyone else, am naturally a coward. So that's why I call out those who don't voluntarily force themselves to grow as being weak, because I do it to myself all the time. And I know that there are some crazy mother fuckers out there who will read this and then do something about it.

As for all the people I offend along the way...that's ultimately their problem. They can choose to use this info as a positive feedback loop and enforce their ********, or as a trigger and do this:
