And even if you don't die, we don't really know the long term effects of Covid. I would assume that the mild cases have no lasting repurcussions, but if you end up on a ventilator on your stomach, how much damage have your lungs taken?

You can't look at overall statistics when you are looking at a specific person. As you get older, the mortality rate increases drastically. For over 80 yo, it is 15%. Still not ebola, but quite significant.
Young girl in the UK died from it. Article references she had no pre-existing conditions.

Anyone can die, it is just statistically improbable. More-so as patients are younger.

There is no doubt that if this has a long enough statistical duration we will gain some very interesting real world numbers on green house gas, global warming etc... Hopefully this data is being collected...
It was shocking to me how quickly some things changed. Specifically, venice canals and italy ports. Magically different in three days. Having everything shut down is not feasible long term, but having a one week shutdown once a year may help remind us what impact we are making on the earth.
I was reading last night about how the virus kills and it’s not pretty. Essentially a large amount of inflammatory chemicals are released in the lungs that attack lung tissue. A massive inflammatory response. An x-ray of an infected patients lungs just shows up white. You’d think that using anti-inflammatories would help but there are complicating factors in that some anti-inflammatories help the body express a receptor that the virus actually uses to attack cells so caution has been advised. That makes things very difficult. Also the inflammatory response is so big that powerful drugs are needed. Some gout medications are being tried. There’s a clinical trial in Montreal based on Colchidine, a gout medication and powerful anti-inflammatory.
There are tons of clinical trials going on around the world right now using various anti-inflammatories to slow down the lung issue, anti-retrovirals for all sorts of different viruses, anti-arthritic compounds, anthelmintics, etc etc. Some of these have a rationale behind them, some are based on anecdotal evidence. They have all been brought online way faster than clinical trials normally are. Many are “Hail Mary“ trials.
