Are you considered Essential to your employer?

Definitely. Traffic is extremely light everywhere. Likely the only upside to this whole thing.

It's nice driving in to/home from work and not have to worry about coming up to/over a rise and have a big yellow weapon coming at you straddling the yellow line. First Student's drivers are complete morons. Predictable, but morons none the less.

You guys along with other construction workers, trades, and delivery guys must be liking the traffic these days. Must make getting things done pretty easy.
takes me half the time to commute home, literally half.

I read an article that some workers for the city are angry because they are considered "Essential" and must report to work while others on the city payroll are on paid leave.

Are you considered 'Essential'? If so, what are your thoughts about having to report while friends and colleagues are able to stay home?

City workers are angry because it is not stated in their Collective Agreement that they are an Essential Service. This is something Management randomly decided. Services declared essential, like the police, removes their right to strike and some other general union rights. Because of this, they are paid substantially more than services not deemed essential.

Yup I am. Got an email stating who’s essential on site, and who’s not. We are field supervisors so as long as the job continues....we go.

99% of office staff removed from site, and I’m flying back to BC in a few days. Unless the feds cancel inter province travel.

at least it’ll be a quiet site, and I got an upgrade to business class!

Essential in the context of a collective bargaining agreement has a different meaning, it means they are unable to collectively withdraw services. In the context of today's crisis it means you are essential to the operation, not some kind of entitlement.

I work in the private sector, my role is deemed "Essential", so I'm in all day keeping the wheels turning. If we shut down anarchy would set in so I get up every morning and do my part. Do I want to be here, do my colleagues want to be here when some of their peers are at home on paid leave -- not really, but it's my job. My employers is pulling out all the stops to keep us safe, and somehow I feel by coming to work to keep the wheels turning for the public is doing my part in a difficult situation.

I don't completely understand why people are trying to get on the "non essential" wagon.
Other than it may be worth your life in some jobs, but then a career change is in order.
At some point, probably soon, the government and businesses are going to have to make cuts.
Will they cut the essential services?

Well if you are on the government payroll an non-essential, most of them are at home and being paid for working. Seems ideal. The government very soon should strike all of those people off the payroll and send them on EI, there is no reasonable timeframe for their return.

Thanks. Hopefully they even let me on site. I've had a dry cough for a week...and in today's climate might be enough to deny me access. Boss said he'll just quarantine me in town for for an extended duration and I can work from here. If not they'll ship me back home. No fever though. They are to be checking all of us before we get on the final ride before camp. Plus I don't want people to look at me like the plague.

My wife is the boss right now because she needs care 24/7 (parkinsonism). Being essential sucks sometimes. She goes to sleep at about 5:30, so i have evenings to myself but during the day i can only be away for a max of 2 hours. My new bike will be ready for pickup soon, but it's a 1 hour drive away. Groan.
Anyone want to take a drive in a Tacoma?

I brought my trailer back from up north so if you need it picked up and dropped just ask

And some day when we can, if you want to have a coffee, my Dad had parkinsons for 25 years. Conversation is always open if you wish.

Yes I am. Trucking industry and mortgage. Trucks gotta get fixed. Mortgage deals still have to go through, although its getting hard.

Just for laugh, saw something like this on Facebook, every employee who thinks they are essential...

Access denied. They didn't like the fact I had a cough, but liked that I was honest about it. So now I'm back at the hotel, awaiting further instructions after I did some online self-assessment. Have a cough, 10 day quarantine according to the site....FML.

I'm glad they're taking it seriously though. The doctor won't see me either because my symptoms aren't serious enough.

Too bad that you flew all the way out there to have this assessment.

I'll most likely be on site tomorrow...but if not then I'll stay at the hotel on their dime and just work from here. No biggie either way. Just annoying as I know the guy I'm here to cross shift is looking to leave ASAP after 17 days on.

? everything works out ok
