Too many people involved for them to get away with it, once one or two are caught they will inevitably talk once they find out how much trouble they are in. Would need to do something like this alone, or at most one other person you know extremely extremely well. They found some smelting equipment and some of the gold.

Here's the thing.. they don't care they got caught. They probably figured they would.
That heist.. they way they did it.. would be worth doing knowing you will get caught.
Those charges are not that serious.. and the amount of time they get.. if any.. will be more than worth what they get away with.

The charges aren't that serious.. I'd go so far as to call most of them minor. Most were, or will be, given a 'promise to appear' for their court dates.
The guy caught with the guns is in trouble for those charges.. but the rest.. don't be surprised if none of them do a single day in jail.
So crime literally DOES pay.
Steal $20M. Get caught. Slap on wrist. Enjoy the rest of your life.
Be dumb, get caught with guns, still probably a slap on the wrist or a couple of years in jail. Profit not only from theft but also from gun running…

How much did the gold weigh considering it is weighed in troy ounces at ~$3300 and ounce and there are 12 troy ounces in a troy pound. I'm guessing a F-150 would have done the job but look more suspicious.
If convicted what is a likely sentence if they don't reimburse? Parole for non violent crime?
