Want to Live? Stay Away from Semi-Trucks ...good article

The law is keep right except to pass - you aren't entitled to sit in the middle lane...moving over to let mergers in, sure, but get back over to the right lane afterward - it's where you belong...if we're going to be honest about it. Enjoy 10 years from now when your "deal with it" attitude means you will be one of the first to be replaced by automation.

This is horsepucky

Not in multi-lane ( 3+ each way )..of course you are entitled to sit the middle lane even tho it's not as safe as the left lane where you are supposed to move over.

The right lane is for those exiting and entering not driving through and is far and away the most dangerous place to ride.

pfft, more mostly fazed out to lunch bs that someone else might be interested in

If we're talking about busy busy traffic, yes, all trucks should probably just sit in the middle or right lanes - but not both.

I didn't support it when they slapped you boys with speed limiters, but if you're gonna admit to being one of the retards that sits in the middle lane all the time don't expect sympathy from me.

Also the idea that we "need" giant transport trucks is nonsense, rail combined with smaller transport units would be perfectly viable, but slightly more expensive. Shipping is pretty much the most cutthroat business there is - if giant pig trucks are 3 cents cheaper, that's what we're going to have.

In Germany lorries aren't allowed to use the highways on Sundays - doing something like that here for rush hour in the GTA would probably alleviate a lot of traffic - and a lot of aggravation for truckers.

If "the other guy" isn't allowed to truck into TO at 4:30pm, that means you don't have to either.

No, it isn't.

http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/driver/handbook/section2.9.2.shtml

You can't just invent rules as you see fit. The right lane is for driving, the other two (or more) lanes are for passing.

----

Lanes aren't meant for sitting in - you should changing lanes constantly to accommodate faster people behind you, and move around people slower than you. I can tell this idea isn't taught properly here because of the feedback in this thread and also just everyday driving - people don't realize overtaking faster traffic isn't just for luxury or so you can get where you are going faster, it is to keep the road clear.

Pretty much dumbasses think they are entitled to just "sit" in one lane and turn off their brain...which quite frankly I don't really care about, but don't complain when people who want to actually use the road properly make dangerous maneuvers to get around the blockers who have their brains turned off.

I keep seeing jokes about my username...I think it was funny the first time...I am not 'unfazed' as in never bothered, I am unfazed as in - I am not fazed by your stupidity and desperate conformity...I will do what makes sense and deal in reality exclusively.

The fact that you bothered to reply, in such detail and length, makes the above assertion rather dubious at best

#fazepalm?

Unfortunately the MTO handbook describes lots of informal 'rules' of the road that aren't actually backed by law in Ontario, and that includes "keep right except to pass". After moving here from a province which had explicit "keep right except to pass" and "do not pass on the right" laws I thought everyone in Ontario was a terrible driver. But I couldn't find equivalent HTA charges for typical multi-lane or divided highway situations, and if they exist they've never been enforced anyway

section 147 (HTA) says any “vehicle travelling upon a roadway at less than the normal speed of traffic at that time and place shall, where practicable, be driven in the right-hand lane…”

unfortunately the second half of what you said, which is "they've never been enforced" is true as the OPP have admitted they don't charge people unless they are driving under the speed limit - but the "keep right law" is on the books - need the porkers to do their jobs, or the porker bosses to let them...whichever is currently preventing enforcement.

we don't navigate hundreds of thousands of pounds of vehicle around day in and day out while staying safe and accident free for decades at a time without being a pro, simple as that.

including a clean license

that's my bar for anyone on the streets riding/driving whatever

This is exactly why we have traffic issues. People are basically lazy, uniformed, and unreasonable.

umm, where practicable, when at less than normal speeds

driving middle lane speeds is ok

ya sure, blame it on the cops now lol

fat pig clueless truckers 1st & porker cops including their bosses now is your story

& those cops/truckers are also expected to listen to you lol

what i mostly see is cagers not moving right & blocking middle lane flow, they can also invoke laws & say fy, i'm driving the limit

Enjoy 10 years from now when your "deal with it" attitude means you will be one of the first to be replaced by automation.

Funny, lots of people have been spouting that for 10 or so years now, and will for 10 or 20 more when in reality it isn't going to happen (same with suggesting pilots will be removed from aircraft, captains will be removed from ships, or engineers will be removed from trains) anytime in the next 2-3 decades, because the reality is that the people who come up with these hairbrained ideas that the operator of a complicated vehicle is easily replaceable by a machine are typically the ones (case in point here) amongst those who haven't the slightest clue about the realities of the jobs they're talking about.

So, first off, newsflash for you. Trains are cheaper. So by your logic everyone should be shipping by them. Guess you've missed the points I've made earlier in this thread why that's not the case.

But hey, by all means, please continue to revel us all in your advice on topics you clearly know nothing about. How about aviation next..any thoughts there? Hey, again, by your logic, we should get all those pesky airplanes out of the skies, put people back on ships to cross the oceans. Worked before, certainly cheaper too when you can stuff a few thousand people on a ship.

By the way, when you make a crude comment in a reply but then edit it out, people who are subscribed still get to see it.

Bikes are even more likely to be in the wrong lane for some strange reason. Supposedly, better drivers and all . . .

Oh, and just what exactly is a middle lane speed? I've never ever heard of that before.

You'd really benefit from coming out with a professional driver for a day and sitting in the cab with one of us and seeing the realities of all the situations you just complained about.

I'd be happy to explain them here as best as possible if you're of an open mind and are interested in learning.

Explanations aside, trust me, spending a day in our shoes... you'd not ***** and whine so much. 99% of the motoring public have no idea about the realities of both the vehicles we operate as well as the conditions we operate them in. To a good majority of the public we are nothing but a hinderance to their day, since of course, they are the most important person in the world.

There's no connection anymore to the fact that pretty much everything they touched, bought, or ate that day was once on one of these very trucks they're now cursing. **** just magically falls from the sky onto store shelves, ya know.

We do pay for it, don't we ? More ways than one. I would rather pay the real cost upfront than all hidden costs driven up by trucking lobby in North America, low regulated industry. Can't believe the technical condition of most of these things driving 120+ as the norm, drivers having spent 10 hours with minimal breaks behind the wheel ... trucking industry, they are no samaritean.

"So ya know, next time you enjoy electricity, think about all those "chinese trinkets and veggies" that might be in the truck next to you. "

Just so you know, we pay for it. Next time when you get a pay cheque, think that we pay for it. In more ways than one. The road congestion, the polution, the road conditions, the lack of noise, polution, technical condition, regulation, etc. Just wondering how European economy can survive by regulating and firmly enforcing their trucking industry ...

"Similar transport units"; you mean, like, TRUCKS?!?! ROFLMAO

You're just trying to troll PrivatePilot, amirite?

You're so far out to lunch on this, it's embarrassing. Look around you RIGHT now: everything you can see and that you own showed up to your door by means of a transport truck. Some of it might not have ever been on a plane or train, but definitely ALL of it used a truck at some point. Even the vehicles you own got to you by being transported on a truck at some point.

Our roadways can definitely use less cars, but not less trucks. Please, stop trying to convince anyone.

I edited it out because while I would certainly say that and mean it about yodude - based on what he's been posting, I realized other people who drive for a living don't need to see that, nor do I feel that way about them. You have this "guy on the internet"'s apology for the comment.

Trains are not cheaper for the same level of service - they are slower. If we were shipping things at the same speed in a train it would be more money than using trucks.

I do know quite a bit about shipping and logistics, I am not just making things up. Also I don't think all truck drivers will be replaced by automation - but some of them will - the ones with attitude problems.

Basically we won't have trucks driving themselves solo in 10 years, but we will have trucks that do most of the driving with a person who isn't required to be as qualified to be behind the wheel (so the companies can cheap out on your pay even more, or just get rid of you).

No, you dipshit, like vehicles with two axles that don't need airbrakes and destroy the road.

Just because "everyone sees" something doesn't mean it's correct. If we said tomorrow "no more large trucks on 400 series highways except from 8pm until 6am" how do you think things would get where they are going? Hint: they still would.

We certainly need less trucks on the road, or at least to charge them huge tolls so that it isn't so cost effective to ship everything all over the continent.

You said "look around you, how did that stuff get there" exactly. The fact that we just ship things without even thinking about it is a huge problem and one of the stupidest things we have do as a species.

"We need trucks" - no, we don't. Transport trucks are a new invention and we existed for thousands of years prior to them and will probably exist thousands of years after we stop using them everyday.

I'll bet you $500 cash, right now right here in front of everyone here at GTAM that in 10 years your statement about "trucks doing most of the driving so companies can hire less skilled drivers" turns out to be a huge steaming load of bunk.

Another newsflash for you - much like going fast on a motorcycle in a straight line is dead easy (but going slow and tight maneuvers in a parking lot requires skill) driving a truck in a straight line from A to B is also (quantifiably, i.e. once you have the required skill set) easy, it's when we get to point B and actually maneuver busy city streets, erratic and insconsoderate drivers, and then need to jam our trucks into locations that many cagers would struggle to get into with their cars (much less us guys with 70+ feet of truck), well, that's where the skilll comes into play. You can't replace that with a computer.

So yeah, the trade isn't going anywhere, again, no more than pilots, captains, and engineers are going away as I mentioned in my last response. Automation will increase, inevitably, but we are a LONG way away from people being removed from the equation.
