They put the Arabic word for "police" on some London police cars. Oh no

whats the big deal?

people who read in whatever language need police sometimes too.

I don't know what the whole big deal is but part of the big deal is that if you reside in this country you should know what "Police" means. It's just one English word. Variations of that word are used the world over. The other part of the big deal is probably all of the other languages not represented on that police car. This is pc garbage.

I would look at is as the opportunity to learn another languages "one word" for police. So when you are travelling you know :)

This is more of a symbol of respect to others mother tongue than any type of loss for Canadians.

Just my opinion.

Of course you want to respect other mother tongues. That's a given. Not putting it on the the cop car is not a sign of disrespect. Not putting it on is a sign of neutrality. Never forget, it's a multicultural country.

I'm guessing that the Arabic script in this case is a nod to the recently-arrived Syrian refugees that were settled in London and was done as a means to allay fears they may have rather than being a harbinger of the "Islamization" of Canada.

It may be a nod but what fears have they expressed that they and some others need special accommodation? "Islamization" of the west is just a matter of time according to experts who track this stuff. That Canadians react should be no surprise.

The first article was absolutely horrible. Plus not all Arabs are Muslim... A few examples are Lebanon and Egypt. Egypt of which is 10 percent Christian, which translates to half of Ontario's population...

Also, its not just Arabic, the cbc article also shows the Chinese word for police.

There are far bigger things to worry about than the words on a cop car.

Yes sorry, I understood that the London police placed several different languages on different cruisers. In the second article even the cruiser in the background has nothing on it.

If this was specific to one language across all cars, my opinion would differ.

I said "may". They come from a war-torn, terror-stricken region of the world, probably don't speak or read English, know no one, have no jobs and are vulnerable. Perhaps someone was thinking along these lines rather than kowtowing to the fiery Imam at the corner mosque.

I agree. When I heard that 25K refugees were coming to Canada I reacted the same way. I posted about my concerns elsewhere on this forum. My concerns largely revolved around the inability to properly vet these individuals, to be able to separate the real refugees from IS fighters who could hide in amongst them. On the issue of script on police cars I'm trying to give the benefit of the doubt and say it's an honest effort on the part of police to help refugees.

My other concerns remain, however...

There are corresponding versions of "police" in others languages too. It has nothing to do with refugees in particular, but with large ethnic groups in general living in London.

Vietnamese: Cảnh sát
Chinese: 警察
Arabic: الشرطة
Persian: پلیس
Polish: Policja
French: Police

More languages are coming. People should relax and not get their bigoted knickers in a knot over something like this.

It's about time. Maybe crime will go down now. I know in the 20th century there was a constant wave of Eastern Europeans, East Indians, Jamaicans, Scots, Italians (ever heard of Cosa Nostra? Me neither) etc.etc. too much to list. Crime was rampant and nobody thought to put "police" in all those languages. The natives have their own police force. But we stole their country so I guess that's ok then.

We are seriously spending tax $ on showing ppl something any 5 year old kid can figure out.
You came to this country then it is up to you to make the effort and show some respect to understand the new environment.
I guess all the food banks are closed, hungry kids averted.

FIRE, uhm what the hell can that mean....better add some stickers to those trucks.

To suggest anyone would have significant trouble identifying a police car, regardless of what language is on the side, is laughable... As stated above, PC publicity stunt; money well spent as usual

How do we translate 911?

Sarcasm assumed. I wonder what this cost in dollars and wasted time. translator, legal opinion, art work, printing, application.

It's easy for the PC types to say it's only $XX,XXX.XX in a budget of many millions but the reality is that the money is no longer available to protect a battered wife, fill potholes, award a scholarship, free up another hospital bed etc. Drunken sailors stop spending when they run out of money.

It seems that politicians spend half their time finding new things to buy and the other half on new ways to tax us.
