So who's building a 300 track bike?

Due to unforeseen circumstances, I have spent my money that I budgeted and will not be racing this year.(I bought a KTM 530 EXC) I will try to make it out for a few trackdays. Good luck to everyone who will be participating and I hope that this class will grow for when I can participate later on.

Bummer:(

sorry to hear that....on another note, anyone got any contacts with Hindle?....I want to try and keep the 300 I'm building as close as possible to CBSK spec

If you can find money for a couple of track days then you have money for a full race weekend, even more if you exploit the RACE mentor program.

RACE mentor program? Where is the info for this?

From a RACE bulletin in November:

CURRENT RACE SUPERSERIES RACERS

Here is a great opportunity for our current RACE Superseries riders at Shannonville Motorsport Park!

Be a mentor to a racer who has never competed before in the RACE series. You can save 50% off your entry fees for the weekend. Come to Registration with your new racer. Register together, and show him or her the ropes and each of you will received 50% off your entry fees for the weekend. This offer is not available through pre-registration.

You can learn more at the upcoming Z1 Advanced track bike preparation seminar with the opportunity to meet possible mentors should you choose to compete next season.

Yep, doubleapex makes a couple of solid points ....
I was sure I'd only ever do trackdays, I was NEVER going to race ..... One race weekend and I was hooked! :)
I also benefitted from the mentoring program too, thanks to Dave and Aaron.

So I can get 50% off with a mentor 1 weekend and 50% off with someone from another race organization for another weekend that would be good.

Just a couple questions, are we allowed steering dampers?

I know quick shifters aren't allowed but if they want the Ninja 300 CSBK guys to run in RACE they'll need to change that rule no?

I guess if YOU bring someone for your second weekend it may work....either as their mentor, or someone from another race series...interesting thought...you sneaky bustard...nice

I have no experience on a 300. On a 250 it would be a waste of money. On a SV650 it's a good investment. My thought is that the $500 would be better spent on riding than the add-on to a 300.

Nope but I don't want to spend $500 on something I can't use:p

I'll start off without one most likely and see how it goes. I've spent too much on it already:)

I could've used one at Allens, during my first race, but that was more down to brain-fade than the 250
I guess if you already had a steering damper fitted you could probably remove it relatively easily, if you were entering a race category where they weren't allowed ? ...... But yeah, there must be better ways of blowing 500 notes ....

So its looking like I'll be in Ontario for the summer and the likelihood of grabbing another bike specifically for the track is increasing.

I'm in a toss up for what I should budget and if I should aim for a 300 or a 250. Seems like I can grab a stock Ninja 250 for around $2000. Stock 300 Ninjas seem to be $3500 on the lower end. That $1500 difference could be 3 extra race weekends, no?

My goal is FUN and to get better at riding. I'd be completely happy finishing last as long as my personal lap times are improving. So if I can improve while spending less, that sounds pretty good to me. How much less fun would it be racing on a 250 and being passed on the straights by the 300s....or is this a completely personal thing? It's not exactly a team sport.

Also, what is a typical race weekend expenses? Transponder? Tires? Oil? Camping/accommodations? Entry Fees? How much track time do you actually get for the fees between practicing and races? It's not exactly clear on the RACE/SOAR websites.

I did the Racer5 3 day course last spring and had a blast on the CBR125s!! I've owned a Ninja 500 and currently on a Street Triple 675…reeaaaallly don't want to use that on the track. It's too pretty. I like the idea of small bikes on the track too.

So i guess my questions are if I go "cheap" with a 250, will I sacrifice fun factor? And what are a more clear breakdown of expenses for a race weekend with small bikes and how much track time do you actually get?

How much track time do you actually get for the fees between practicing and races? It's not exactly clear on the RACE/SOAR websites

On SOAR:

Saturday:
You practice Saturday Morning from 9am to 11am aprox - 3 groups so you are on track on a rotation.
Fom 11 to aprox 2 are the Qualifying races so depending on how many classes you entered you are racing for aprox 8 laps.
from 3 to 6 is the endurance race: The best way to get laps and be on track. You can make a team of 2 or 3 or 4 members and you race for 3 hours no stop (unless a red flag) - it costs approximately 220 divided among all team members

Sunday:
Again Practice from 9 to 11
Races start at 11 and go to aprox 4/5 pm depending on how many people decide to go bush waking.
Approximately 12 laps depending of configuration and depending of how many classes.

I have also done RACE but they are different, Instead of Qualifying races they do (in some classes) a timed qualifying for grid position MotoGP style, but some classes do a qualifying race - It is a little confusing for me so I will let others that spend more time there explain.

I have raced a 250 while recuperating from an injury and you should just go for it, if you are trying to get better and have a lot of fun you can't go wrong. If you have good corner speed you can make up the difference in speed in the straight vs a 300 etc.

Breakdown in expenses:
It wasn't my bike but I believe he ran 2 sets of tires for the entire season including endurance races.
Gas was a non factor - Probably not even a tank a day. One refill for the entire endurance race if I remember correctly. But for sprint racing probably a tank a day IF!
So - One time purchase of 150 for the license
Aprox 130 per class, the more classes you enter the lower the price per class goes
If you do a Friday practice day is about 150 I think and it runs like a track day (a fast one)
