Why do group rides bring out so many morons?

I am with you Joe. Love riding on my own. Do what I like when and where. No meeting places. Chose when I want to stop and go etc. No hassles.
Tried riding with others. A few group rides. I ride for the freedom, fast, slow. Always my choice. Happy, Happy, Happy. Winner.

^ This. This is my 6th season. In season's 2-3 i did a few GTAM group rides (whatup Dhruv!!) and met some great people, but I've also joined one or two that had people riding irresponsibly.

Nowadays I'd MUCH rather ride solo, or perhaps with a small group of people (even better if they're people I know personally).

most people are morons
I used to think like this, then realized that most people think that most people are morons, meaning they think you and I and anyone in this conversation are also morons, and since they are wrong, the statement must be wrong ;)

We all think everyone else is a moron and we also think we are awesome riders and drivers so someone must be wrong, except me, I am awesome at everything... well maybe not at spelling

Re: Why are non-sport bike riders so Holier than Thou? ;)

What's with all this hating on the Mormons?

If you don't want to ride with the Jesus-people, go find some other people to ride with...
Lolz

Do we have a statistical proof of this moron ratio on group rides? Because there are just as many solo morons that crash and/or get arrested for idiotic things.

Many good, experienced riders form groups. They generally prefer riding with people who respect the road and fellow human beings.

We do have proof. Most polls show that at least 90% of the population are idiots, but that 100% of the population believe that it's always somebody else, and that exactly 0% of polls are actually statistically correct.

I gave up on most group rides mostly because some numpty would start doing wheelies (in not ideal locations), the group would have to wait for smokers who made pitstops excessively long, or someone would forget to get gas at the last stop and we'd be stuck waiting again. Coles notes: too much time wasted on someone elses schedule.

Also, I have never ridden dirt, but I would imagine that that is one situation in where I would want to participate in a group ride.
That is all.

Don't go solo, it would be awfully hard for you to pull the Shadow out of the mud by yourself.

It is not easy finding other riders who are compatible with your riding style, but when you do find a couple guys it can be fun.

In my eyes, there are two kinds of group rides.
Ones that I like, are the ones that focus on corners, through the country side.
And group rides out on the 401.
Of the two, the 401 rides can be the most dangerous. Guys who don't look around for other riders when cutting in and out of cars at high rate of speeds, have many close calls and just don't care. They never think that another rider could be in the spot they are cutting into because they are going way too fast, when another rider has to cut into the same spot because he just ran up the side of a transport truck on the other side of the highway.
Most riders get all pumped up on adrenaline, that they don't think about their abilities. When adrenaline outweighs experience, bad things happen.

On twisty roads it becomes, I can do anything you can do.
Just because the rider ahead can take that corner at that speed does not mean that the inexperienced rider can.
Some group rides in this category can become stupid. Some riders will not be riding with insurance, a licence or they may be wanted by the police, so when someone crashes, they all scatter leaving the poor bastard who fell to his own devices. Scum bags leave a fallen rider.

Mixed emotions on group rides. I really enjoy talking to different riders and meeting new people on the rides. Every ride I've gone on, I've learned at least one new thing from somebody.

That said I really dislike group "riding." For all the usual reasons.

At least they take eachother out and not innocent people.

I ride with a club. We have about 75 members on paper (riders and passengers) with a core group of about 30 that regularly show up. We ride in formation, don't act like idiots, and end up having a lot of fun with each other.

A group ride is meant to be in formation. You can't call a bunch of individuals going all over the place a group ride..... that's just a bunch of asshats. You wanna race? Book a track day.

All and allI have had some pretty good luck on group rides, meet some new people, share alaugh or two. That being said I also like to ride alone. I guess a time andplace for both

Belated apologies to the band of goldwingers I buzzed Sunday morning. I know, I get it, you got to wait for your slower buds for all the various slower bud reasons.

Um. Not the kind of group ride the thread is about.

A "group ride" need not be a Harley/Goldwing parade in formation, nor does it need to be a race on public roads.

I have no use whatsoever for riding in parades in formation. Pointless.

Track days are not for racing, wanna race, get instruction, qualify for a race license and go racing.
Sorry, I don't understand this. Track days then are for times? So you race yourself? If I'm reading that correct. I assumed you were racing the others not merely riding with them.
