Want to Try dirt

There are facts that are being ignored. The 4 strokes are easier to ride.

2015 YZ450 52 rwhp 4 stroke
2002 CR250 52 rwhp 2 stroke
2015 YZ250 40 rwhp 4 stroke

Even old 2 strokes make great power but they are harder to ride well.

You're saying none of the other guys on the 250 F's or 450 F's on that track knew how to ride?

You write in this thread that you own an RM 250 yet you are defending four strokes. You then write that you don't care about sleds, then you write you have a Nytro.

MotoGP used to use 125 and 500 two strokes. To achieve the same power in a four stroke they had to double the cc's. Which is what you're disputing. MotoGP doesn't know what they're doing?

If your on a 450 against a rider with equal skill on a 125 you will smash them.

Just because I own somthig doesn't make it more powerful, apparently for you it does.

No I don't care about sleds, I'm selling it to go ice racing.

Still no replies about my facts vs your YouTube videos....

Don't be afraid to look at dirt alternatives like flat track or trials.Lots of classes for beginners too.

These are crank measurements, not the useful rear wheel measurements. Facts are good but you cannot leave out certain parameters or else you might look like you are trying to win an argument with false information, like a little kid. Wouldn't that that would we.

Yamaha is quoted as saying their 2015 YZ450 makes 52 hp AT THE REAR WHEEL. Which dirt bike magazine says is still UNVERIFIED.

i do not give half information. I don't care which bike winds up being faster, better, more powerful. I do not have money riding on this. I just bring factual information. If others choose to argue against numbers then I let the statements be judged for everyone's enjoyment.

You sound like you are having an angry agenda and while it is amusing, I have to wonder why?

Please continue.

Saw the thread about your Ossa, saw the vid that was posted in another thread, got intrigued. Asked about beginner lessons at the show. Might not be for me, but would love to say I tried it. Gonna try and get out and watch some trials action this year.

Look me up next season. You would be welcome to try it before or after a competition.

A perfect incentive for me to drop more than a few pounds. That would be super cool. Thank you. I will do my best to take you up on that offer.

Nowhere in the article did they say it was crank hp. The new 450's make substantially more power than any 250 2s, they are no longer in the same class as time has marched on. Also, the same magazine rates the 2014 250 sxF at 42hp. So this to me means they're rating at the wheel according to your numbers. What magazine rates bikes at the crank?

I have no agenda. People talking about things that were relevant in 2004 as if nothing's changed in 11 years is ridiculous and incorrect.

I ride two stroke all the way. Why? Cost of rebuilding a four stroke, I could do a top end on my ktm 200 exc in a couple hours, for around $200-300 bucks.
Op, if you want an off-road trail only bike look for a wr250, klx300, or a kdx220. All relatively low maintainence, highly fun bikes. If you want a road legal bike, look at a drz. If you want arm pulling power that has to be rebuilt every season at a cost of $1400-$2500, go kxf, crf, rmz, or yzf. Modern 4s mx bikes are seriously costly to maintain and repair. I've owned many dirtbikes, and in my opinion nothing beats a ktm 200/300xc or xcw in the woods.

Edit: you guys who ride dirt, shame on you. Even for an experienced rider, there is a learning curve getting in the dirt. Suggesting high powered, high cost bikes to a newb is not cool. What he needs is a trail bike, a fun bike.
Op I have a honda crf230f in my stable, I keep it for my wife and friends who don't have a bike. You are welcome to give it a go anytime.

I've actually started looking at the crf230f while everyone was arguing about 2-stroke snowmobiles. I appreciate the offer and would definitely take you up on it if I was a little closer to Barrie. I think I'll try and find one at a dealer to see if it feels cramped. The internet tells me that the seat is 4 inches lower then the WR250F.

If you can hold out until spring, book something with TrailTours. They've got a bunch of Honda models available for use, including the CRF230. I did a couple of days with TrailTours over the years on CRF230s and found it to be a good choice for your first few times off road. It is quite tame.

It has been recommended a couple of times already in this thread, but the KDX220 is a really good option for an adult with street experience wanting to get into off road riding. It has something over double the horsepower of the CRF230 with approximately the same weight, and despite being 2stroke the power delivery is still quite friendly. It is also sized for an adult - at 5'10" I found the CRF230 a bit cramped, for instance.

The KDX was one of those few that I could find which fit in the gap between the play bikes like the TTR230, CRF230 and the MX race models. It looks kind of uncool parked next to a spotless KTM, but it is cheap, reliable and tons of fun.

For the OP if you do like the DRZ, and you're a team green fan, you can also buy a KLX 400 which is made by Suzuki for Kawasaki. It's a DRZ 400 with green fairings. You can own a bit of history, as well as one of, if not, the most dependable bikes ever built. You'll usually find 03/04's on Kijiji for ~ $2000 - $2500. The resale on a DRZ / KLX is good to great. If I'm a city rider, looking to get into trail riding on the cheap, this is my first choice.

My RM250 over a season will need oil and air filter changes. 2 seasons it might need a top end if I get out on it more than 15-20 rides this year (already has a season on it). If you ride every weekend/all weekend or race at or above an intermediate level, a top and and clutch will be due after the season.

On a KDX you'll probably get 4 seasons of trail riding before a $300 top end is possibly needed. They aren't high strung race bikes.

I should rebuild my 1996 RMX250 soon as its still on original bore and piston with still 180psi:D

Ended up getting a 2009 KLX250S for $1800. Needs a few things to safety if I want it blue plated so I think I'll just use it off road to start.
