Want to Try dirt

It's a worn path between trees. I haven't been to Ganny since 1997. All grown over?

Oh single track trails? Ones where you have a few inches on each side of your bar? Ya there's tons of those, actually that's 90% of what I ride on. The wider stuff isn't as challenging and there's too many weekend warriors on quads riding on whatever side they want to. It's good for a rest and a few wheelies once in a while though.

WR's are easy to kick over if you know the procedure and the valves are properly adjusted. $2200 is steep... I bought a 2002 wr250f blue plated 3 yrs ago for $1600.

you'd like something with an E-start.. that's for sure.
look for a newer WR that's been cared for.

I've heard people complain about the extra weight of an electric start. Is it that noticeable? I also think it would be pretty convenient to not be kicking the bike over all day.

They don't add much weight (~10lbs) especially with the new lightweight batteries however if your bike is running properly it shouldn't take more than 5 kicks when it's stone cold and 2 after its warmed up. 4s is a couple extra possibly unless something's wrong.

How you spent more time maintaining a 2 stroke than riding one? You know...... the comment from your post that I quoted?

Ok so to keep it easier. I have 5 dirtbikes to maintain for the same # of riders. Since the only difference between them really is the engine. You can imagine what happens when 1 of them has a problem. I don't get to ride since I have to fix it. So the # of days I was a) not able to go since 1 of them major issues and therefore not even able to take the family or b) had minor issue such as a plug etc issue while riding therefore stopping the ride was terminated since 1 was down for a while I rarely rode compared to how much I had wanted to.

Replaced them with 4 strokes and in 4 years I have lost 0 days riding.

The old 400's were cold blooded and hard to start if you weren't familiar and comfortable with the process. I wouldn't buy one.

Others have suggested the WR250F and it's likely a better idea. There's currently one on Kijiji in Oshawa for $2300 that's supposed to be in good shape and well maintained.

You're big enough for the 400 but as a beginner it might tire you out quickly. I also think the 250 might be easier to sell when you're done with it. Whatever you do don't get an MX bike for trail riding, even an old one.

Strange. I've had all kinds of 125 and 250 2 stroke RM and KX early 90's models that never had any issues besides regular maintenance, and they were ridden HARD and were not new when I got them.

Never had a problem with any of them.

"Don't get a 250 2 stroke you'll put your eye out" lol Love it. And true. Very unboring tho. 2 stoke MX bikes are way more exciting than their 4 stroke counterparts. Lighter, flickier and all round cheaper to maintain.

Get a newer blue plated DRZ 400 E. It's the enduro model. You can ride it to the trails and insurance is uber cheap. You've ridden street bikes...a 250 4 stroke will feel like a moped to you. Don't do it.

A 250 4s mx bike would tear a ninja 250/300 2 new rearends and then walk past that drz on one wheel.

My yz250f was scary fast...people don't realize!

I want a dirt bike too. Will buy a CR500. What's the worst that could happen??

I don't believe this for a minute. The general rule of thumb is double the cc's of a 4 stroke = the power of a 2 stroke. This rule applies all the way up to MotoGP.

He already has motorcycle experience. A DRZ is the most practical city to trail bike. Solid as a rock. They never break or grenade and parts are available on Kijiji cheap and the resale is great.

Well for 2014 Y450F is 52hp

YZ250 is 48hp

So the rule of thumb is a bit off

And a four stroke has tons of power down low, unlike a smoker

Believe it. One is a highly tuned race bike the other is a beginners street bike. 250 2 strokes race in the same class as 250 4s.

I'd love to drag race a cbr500 on my 250, 500 on asphalt 250 in the dirt lol! That would be hilarious, not so much for the guy on the 500 but still fun.

I own an RM 250 as well as Husqvarna TE 511 as well as my GSX-R 1000. The only bike I've never yawned on is my RM 250. If I did, it would kill me.

One way to prove things is through proof.

KX450F & RM250 Street drag race: http://youtu.be/SYfbr0GjVyU

Both of these guys are very experienced MX riders. A 250 two-stroke will annihilate a 250 four stroke, as well it will par or beat a 450 four stroke as seen here.

I'm embarrassed at some of the comments written in this thread.

250 2s turn the same lap times as the 250 4s which is why our national MX series has them classed together, again believe it! Yes the 250 2s has more tq and is faster in a straight line however a 450 4s makes substantually more power then the 250 2s that stoped developing 10 years ago unless it's a ktm.

Not every 250 4s is created equal. A cbr250 has 1/2 the power of a cr250f. Quit embarrassing yourself.

A sxf/kxf/yzf/crf/rmz 450 would make that TE511 their *****.

it is funny with people having all this knowledge but never having ridden what they are experts on.
