Default Bill 117

I know everyone is aware of Bill 117 to ban children under 14 from being passengers on a motorcycle. The legislation is baseless, drummed up by a Markham MPP who felt she had to propose some kind of private member's bill.

Check out me and my son in Wednesday's story on CTV regarding the motorcycle legislation that has now passed second reading.

go to: http://toronto.ctv.ca then click on:
Ont. motorcyclists see red over ban
Motorcycle enthusiasts are gearing up to fight a Queen's Park private members bill that would ban kids under 14 from riding as motorcycle passengers. Austin Delaney reports.

Also, here is a copy of the email that I sent to my local MPP and the member who is sponsoring the legislation. Maybe you all would like to do the same.

PLEASE DO NOT SUPPORT BILL 117!!

The motorcycling community is shocked that this bill is being considered, let alone passed second reading.

Those who support this bill are most certainly not motorcyclists and don't understand what riding adds to a young person's life.

My son is going on 13. He has been riding with me for three years. In his time in the saddle he has learned respect for the rules of the road and defensive driving. He now wants to get his motorcycle license when he is of age.

But what supporters of this legislation fail to recognize is that everytime we ride together, we create memories for him. He will always remember the Saturdays when we would simply say to each other "Where do you want to go today?" Then we would hop on the bike and go out and explore our community, our city, our province. That's what this legislation will take away from a father and his son. And you can bet my story is not unique.

Children are riding offroad motorcycles at five years of age. Will that be outlawed next by people who have undoubtedly never been on a motorcycle in their lives. Please tell me the last time a child was killed on the back of a motorcycle. I am in the media. I know who most often crash motorcycles and they are not moms or dads with their children on the back.

Please oppose this bill before it's too late... I don't want to lose a year of building memories with my boy!

I agree with the lifestyle argument you are making in terms of the benefits to your son.

However, why not fight this based on the simple fact that there have been zero (or almost zero) deaths caused by this in the past 8 years? Why do we need a law for a problem that doesn't exist?

EXACTLY. Watch the CTV story and listen very closely to the MPP who's sponsoring this bill.

Why people here keep posting that second reading went through on Nov 4? It's obvious that it is only scheduled for Dec 4.

For once CTV did a fair piece.

I would actually suggest that you write your own letter, rather than duplicate someone else's. Reason: a message that someone has taken the time to write by themselves will be noticed more than just another form letter. (In no way does this stop you from making use of facts or statistics quoted in other letters, though.)

I fully realize that the MPP in question is replying by using form letters. I have a funny feeling that she's overwhelmed with responses.
