German family on vacation in Alberta involved in road rage shooting.
Traveling west from Calgary to Banff, there was a highway altercation.
Victim's vehicle left the roadway and hit a tree. His head was found to contain a bullet.

RCMP have siezed a car and taken a suspect into custody.
No name yet released for the suspect that ventilated the German's skull,
during his impromptu expression of Freedom!

There is no such freedom, and the suspect will find that out in court. Attempted murder. Off to jail.

If you read through the article it says they think it wasn't road rage.

So who pays for his medical expenses if he didn't have travel insurance or not enough? It shouldn't be him if he was an innocent bystander. Sounds like it targeted and mistaken identity?

If he didn't have enough insurance , he pays. Whether or not the bill is collectible is another story but he'll get a bill.

Sure sounds like a 'hit' . The RCMP say it wasn't road rage and the other occupants of the SUV were not targets. Once more detail comes out this will be interesting.

They used really poor wording then, if that was the case: “Information to this point strongly suggests that this was not a case of road rage, nor a random incident,” police say. “None of the occupants of the Durango were the intended targets of the shooting.” How was he not an occupant of the Durango?

Exactly re paying. It depends on the coverage Germany sets in its health care plan if the victim doesn't have travel insurance. Not unlike us going to the USA. Remember the Boston Marathon bombing? The victims had to pay their own medicals unless they had private coverage.

At one time OHIP covered out of province and country medical treatment coverage but someone needed drug or alcohol rehab and when OHIP found out they were on the hook for a month or two at a $3K a day spa in the balmy south the rules changed.

Apparently OHIP does still provide some coverage but getting a number isn't easy.

The big difference when dealing with the US medical system is their first thought is "How much money can we get out of the patient?" where with countries with social programs it's "What do they need?"

Keep in mind having OHIP doesn't cover all hospital bills in Alberta, let alone much outside Canada.

German Consulate staff are involved, I'm sure they'll ensure med bills get paid
have worked with a few Germans over the years
anyone that has, will likely have the same impression
that they are not the sort of people to take a trip to Canada, uninsured
and in the interest of protecting Alberta tourism
don't think you'll see any negative press about trying to collect from a foreign national shot in the head

like stated, will be interesting to see the rest of this strange story
if it wasn't road rage, then what? attempted thrill kill?

Not sure I understand this statement. I very much doubt people are “free” to kill. I believe it’s either attempted murder, or if the gentleman dies murder
