American boycott

LOL. Dream on. His approval rating is 90%. Conservative voters always show up to vote. It's the lazy lib-left welfare cases who support the Democrats who stay home. At 45%, Trump is going to win the next election. No doubt about it. Americans love his establishment bashing style and with the latest win at the Supreme Court on the immigration ban his fans are buzzing. He's here for a long time. Get used to it.

car·i·ca·ture
ˈkerikəCHər,ˈkerikəˌCHo͝or/Submit
noun
1.
a picture, description, or imitation of a person or thing in which certain striking characteristics are exaggerated in order to create a comic or grotesque effect.

His approval numbers are with one demographic that’s slowly finding out he’s not the pot of gold he promised. The majority of Americans still loathe him. The conservatives love him now but when their pocketbooks look lighter they’ll dump him just as fast. His win at the Supreme Court was a partisan one with a loaded bench. He’s alienated allies, sided with child molesters, used charities as personal piggy banks and had more indictments leveled against his associates than any predecessor. He’s a perfect role model who has put everything nicely in place for another recession.

Good leaders unite people....sociopathic ones drive them apart.

You can school me on that after he's re-elected. In a democracy so-called "good" leaders win elections. Because that's all that matters.

It used to be that a little humanity, common decency, honesty and trustworthiness were all that mattered.

I work with Americans every day in person. Believe me, Americans are all about Americans. They regard Canadians as foreigners and not necessarily friends, or brothers or all that jingoism we get from politicos up here.

And it's not new attitude, either. I know a customer (moved here from the US decades ago) who explained it using similar terms. "If you're not American, you're a foreigner. Nothing personal." Canadian (and Mexican) sovereignty only exists at this point because their federal governments are more supine to resource exploitation than they would be case if both were actual American states.

You are a foreigner while in the States by the definition of the word.

I have no issue with Americans, they have been incredibly helpful and friendly on my numerous trips south of the border. From my experience they seem much more willing to help and lend aid then I have ever seen in Canada. Of course this is just one mans experience and opinions so it does not count for much. I enjoy everything about going to the US. Border crossing is always a breeze and find border guards have always been very kind and courteous while coming home to Canada I find the exact opposite most of the time, there are a few gems out there every now and then.

I've never had any problems crossing the border in either direction. I don't try to be evasive or overly chatty - just pleasant, polite, direct and honest.

I've dealt with Americans for decades (selling to them & buying from them). Again, for the most part they're the same as us. On recent trips, most of the people I've run into say things like, "He won the election, he's the president and I will respect the office; but jeez I'll be glad when he's gone."

Yes, from time-to-time you will run into a 'Mericun, complete with his/her guns+jesus+constitution= USA!USA!USA!, but not that often.

Fear, mixed with desperation and anxiety over social and societal change that you can't control creates the Trumps and Sanders of the political world.

It is also possible to run into the smug Canadian up here, and also when one travels abroad. He/she freely and without prompting extols all the superior virtues of Canada & Canadians. A few years ago in Nepal I struck up a conversation with a fellow in a tea lodge on the trail to Everest base camp. After a while he asked where I was from, and learning I was from Canada he said he was surprised as I didn't have a flag on my pack so people didn't mistake me for American (he was American). I told that my perspective was if someone plodding along this trail, in this spectacular place, surrounded by this culture was going to judge me (one way or another) based on a flag sewn to my pack then I'd rather they just leave me alone.

As for boycotting US products, I try to purchase Canadian grown/made wherever possible but if the choice is made in USA or Europe vs. made in China for example I'll buy the American or European one - all things being more or less equal.

Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy is set to retire, giving President Donald Trump the chance to cement a conservative majority on the top court.

And this is why Trump(republican) was elected. There was a very good chance of Kennedy retiring and still a chance of Ginsburg retiring during Trump's presidency. The chance to shape the SCOTUS for the next generation was waiting for whomever won. This is a big reason the republican senate did not confirm Obama's last nomination. They hoped that a republican would be president. Worked out for them. It will be interesting to see who votes for the confirmation of the Trump nomination. I believe that 3 dems voted for Gorsuch. The crazies from msnbc are pinning all of their hopes and dreams on senator Flake voting against any nomination. I can't see this happening. Will be an amusing month or two as I'm sure everybody wants it done before the mid-term elections on the off chance the senate swings democrat.

it will require 3 GOP Senators to vote against the nominee to scuttle it
not a chance in hell of that happening
Flake likes to break from Trump, but can't see him doing it on this
and leaving the slim possibility of a Dem Senate to confirm a nominee
the other possible dissenters are Corker and McCain
again, while they are no fans of Trump
not a chance they will pass on the opportunity to get another hard Conservative on the SC
McConnell will ram the hearings and a vote through before the midterms

Really depends on who they nominate – if Trump nominate some crazy far right Bible thumping conservative who says he will take away women’s rights you may see several of the females in the senate Senate kill the nomination as many have already stated that they see things like Roe V Wade as “settled law” they they have no interest in seeing reopened.

Add in a possible no from McCain (who may come back to vote for such an important situation) and a possible F-You vote from Flake...and a batshit crazy conservative may not make the cut.

I agree you will see them jam somebody through before the midterms, however there’s hope that they won’t be batshit crazy religious far right at least.

On another topic, the USA should work towards removing political and religious affiliation and viewpoints from their supreme court – they have no business being there. Decisions should be made by the laws as written, not because their chosen diety tells them to think one way or the other.

They might get the nomination through but if they try to challenge abortion ruling the women will be out with pitchforks

Would the surprise court ultimately give a flying F if the government somehow managed to get it there?

Trumps evangelical base sure would love him for it, and we know it’s all about the votes in the end, right?

He won fewer votes than Hillary ...you think he would be elected now ?? I don't. The big hate for him would just be bigger.

depends who is opposed
it's generally accepted Sanders would have beat him

the long term consequences of the DNC rigging the primary
will be felt be generations
Trump is going to get probably one more SC nomination

He would win again with ease. You must know the popular vote is irrelevant. No way I would see the electoral vote changing in any meaningful way. Regardless of your personal opinions of Trump he would have a lot to crow about in an election campaign. The dems are in a complete state of disarray. They have no platform other then vote for us cause Trump sucks. This will not win. They have no leader that can in any meaningful way combat Trump. As much as others like to think Sanders would win, I really don't believe Americans would vote for a complete left wing socialist. The only way Trump does not get a second term is if the economy tanks.

Have you looked at the possible nominees? None are crazy. All will be in the mold of Gursuch. They will be staunch conservatives. I'd also guess all are somewhat religious. Will Roe be reopened? Who knows. Gorsuch tilted the court conservative. The Kennedy replacement will keep it conservative. I wish they could find a conservative like Kennedy who also had some left leaning tendencies. He was a good swing vote. But, that will not happen.

I agree that I'd like to see neutral judges on the scotus. Decisions can not be made solely on laws as written. There will always have to be some looking at laws as intended. Just reality. The judges will always be influenced by their personal beliefs. But, it seems now that all decisions are just split on ideological lines. Shame really...
