Recommend a good stand alone back protector...

My wife bought me a new 1 piece race suit at a swap meet from agv sport. I need one that I can wear under the suit with a body strap and shoulder straps.

Do you guys recommend back protector or a vest? A friend recently had an accident and even at low speed, his rib cage was severely damaged which got me thinking about a vest rather than a back protector alone.
What are the pros/cons of each?

Any thoughts/tips would be apprecoiated
 
I have a Dainese action wave back protector new with the tags still on it if you're interested. Very similar to the other one in the post if you are interested. $80 if interested.
