Leafs win this trade by making sure no Salary retained. Cost them $500K to write Deon off 4 years ahead of schedule and free up cap space. Now they just need to get a top 4 pick and continue the rebuild.
 
They did not free up cap space immediately though. There isn't more room for Stamkos either this year or next. The new guys are probably easier to flip in the short term though.

I get it everyone is jumping on the Stamkos train, but even if you bring him in, who the hell does he play with? who is gonna get him the puck?

Right now, the best thing for the Leafs is to tank, and tank hard.
 
Or do like the Habs have been doing for close to 30 years now. Put 5 stiffs and a superstar goalie on the ice then keep teasing the fanbase by reaching the conference finals once in a while.
 
Finally reached rock bottom, would be sweet if the leafs won the draft lottery. I enjoyed watching these no-name players more than last years underachievers despite them finishing dead last.
 
Thread title needs to be changed to: Toronto Maple Lasts Suck. Basically, they don't need to win to fill the seats. Other clubs do. That leaves an opportunity.
 
LOL ... this is what's wrong with this predominantly corporate market .... it's like getting a bonus every year without meeting your goals ... only in hockey and in Toronto (probably New York as well ...)
 
next up...the #4 pick in the draft. Because Edmonton will get the #1. again.

We're finally gonna get a #1 center. With the youth coming up, really can start to get excited for this team to be competitive again.

Have they traded it for future considerations yet, will they pick someone for a redundant position, or someone who would normally go in the 11th round?

It's unlikely that will happen. The regimes of the past are gone. This front office actually seems like it's trying and sticking to a plan.

I'm more interested to see what the Leafs do in the FA market this summer. The draft, meh: One guy -- a kid -- isn't going to make any difference as Edmonton has aptly demonstrated over the years. Sure, we'll take this kid (who we won't see for years because he'll be sent down to the Marlies...) but surround him with more talent than guys like Bozak and Kadri and Lupul etc.
 
Still need better goal tending as well.
