Just to keep the recent movie thread about recent movies.

I'd recommend The Princess Bride to anyone who hasn't seen it yet.

What is considered old?

North by Northwest, Citizen Kane, Manhattan.. etc.

or

Dances with Wolves, The Good, the Bad the Ugly, The Goonies

Just throwing those out there. ;)

Anything that came out a year ago or more for sure.

Closer than that it depends if it's still screening or is into the secondary market.

Shawshank Redemption, Cat Balou, Evil Roy Slade, The Pianist, Sound of Music, Runaway Jury.

I'll try to think of good black and white films later, such as A Christmas Carol (1951 Alistair Sim), and almost anything by Hitckcock.

Das Boot is interesting in that I found myself sympathizing with the German crew after a while.

Film noir from the late 1940's is interesting. Everyone smokes, wears hats and the dated macho "Hey babe" dialogue is a chuckle.

Hands down my favourite of all time. (not the 1996 remake with Robert Urich)

Bridge over the River Kwai (sp?)

Any of the Bourne Identity films with Matt Damon

Casino Royale , either one

Disneys Little Mermaid

Any of the Errol Flynn swashbuckling movies (Captain Blood, The Adventures of Robin Hood, etc.). Somewhat campy. The Hero is a hero, the villain is an archetypal villain, but a lot of fun to watch with subtle humour and innuendo.

Full Metal Jacket, The Martian, American Psycho, Mad Max: Fury Road, The Hangover, Training Day, Heat, Boyz N the Hood.

Holy crap "Cat Balou"! I remember watching that with my dad.

Not "great" films exactly, but ones that I enjoyed and have watched multiple times:
Grease & the original Point Break

And of course The Breakfast Club and Outsiders

True Lies with Arnie. He said his movies should be thought of as cartoons and yeah he's right.

Plunder Road is a mid 50's film noir that has a turn of events when a gas station attendant gets suspicious because someone is carrying a gun. Now in the USA you're suspicious if you aren't carrying.

Apocalypse Now - theatrical release, not the Redux
need a large screen, good sound equipment
and 2.5 uninterrupted hours, masterpiece

Frankenstein - Boris Karloff.
Gone With the Wind.
Murder my Sweet.
The Maltese Falcon
Chinatown
Hell's Angels - Howard Hughes version
The African Queen
A Tree Grows in Brooklyn
The Big Sleep
The Treasure of Sierra Madre
Ride of the Magnificent Seven - 1960s version (hilarious the way the Americans see themselves vs Mexicans in that movie)
Tora! Tora! Tora!
Midway
What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? - Betty Davis
North by Northwest
The Dawn Patrol
Captain Blood
How The West Was Won

Loads of great classics that should never be missed, but the noirs are my favorites. They just don't do them the same way these days.
