The GTAM pop/cross culture catch-all thread

There's Hyperthymesia (eg: Marilu Henner) and Savant Memory (eg: Rain Man).

"Cases of hyperthymesia differ from related cases of savant memory in that savants have an extraordinary memory for specific hobbies, and events of a narrow basis, whereas cases of confirmed hyperthymesia show surprisingly detailed memory for specific and general events.".

Sean McVay likely has mild/high functioning Autism.

pop culture indeed, I was trapped at the dentist office with a collection of 'people' style mags, I recognized none of the hot actors, models, people famous for being famous. I felt like I may be missing something. I was. It was 10am and I always have a second coffee about 10. I was missing a coffee.

Elon Musk has turned into a bit of a spoilt ****. His whiny outbursts recently haven’t portrayed him in a very good light at all. He grabs the limelight a lot and you don’t hear about the other companies doing similar things around the world like Boeing who are still developing new spacecraft.

Anybody going to Nuit Blanche in TO this year?

Pop culture is not about gossip magazines. Though there may be the odd gossip post that comes up in the thread. Pop culture "is generally recognized by members of a society as a set of the practices, beliefs, and objects that are dominant or ubiquitous in a society at a given point in time."

He's quite a character. As I've learned more about him and his ventures, I think he's like the Howard Hughes of the 21st century. IMO, it's great to be around for the time of such a rare occurrence and shining star. I've got mad respect for him, but it looks like such amazing people often also have their quirks and eccentricities, much like Howard Hughes again.

I used to too but I actually have more respect for Bill Gates now as he’s set up his foundation to really try to address serious issues affecting the poorest and most vulnerable in the world rather than feed various vanity projects.

I think of Bill Gates as helping the world through charity now while Elon Musk is helping the world through big ideas/innovations/engineering. Stuff that if successful should transform the world for the better. They are a little different in approach but I think both are noble. I'm happy we have both types around.

Thinking about those two people, it made me wonder if anyone has compared their intelligence. Yes, lots have, interestingly. e.g., https://www.quora.com/Is-Elon-Musk-smarter-than-Bill-Gates

Here's a great recent article about Elon Musk for the pop culture thread and anyone interested. In Elon Musk’s World, Brakes Are for Cars, Not C.E.O.s.

A few more here. Elon has been changing the world many different ways. I had no idea until more recently.

Here's the recent Joe Rogan broadcast.

He's such an effective communicator and well spoken. I'm rooting for Elon's success and hope more real world change happens. It will be interesting pop culture to watch.

Cheers

I’m not so convinced. Without Musk there’d still be all the same developments just not as much glitz, headline grabbing behaviour etc. Electric cars for the masses?....those aren’t Tesla’s. They come from Nissan etc. Space exploration? Plenty working on that too. Again though, he’s very media savvy.

Is he bright? Yes, undoubtedly...he made a packet with PayPal. Is he Tony Stark? No...but I think he wishes he was.

The real turning point for me was when when he threw a strop in Thailand with the rescue of the kids there and the way he behaved afterwards.

To each their own. He should be held accountable for his social media interaction around the Thai rescue. Again, shades of Howard Hughes with genius level intellect but also some magnified flaws. It's interesting pop culture.

As for something new, I like comedy. I listen to the comedy channel on TV and Sirius/XM. Comedy is pop culture. Here's an entertaining comedy bit I heard again recently. NSFW. Cheers

Getting back to finishing about Elon Musk in pop culture, I recently found out he's dating Grimes who's a great Canadian music and visual artist with wide acclaim. I'd call her music style indie pop edm. I've previously posted her songs and videos here in the music thread. This reminds me again of Howard Hughes who was also big into actresses and singers (lots of parallels). Did anyone see the recent Grimes and Azelia Banks beef that Elon got indirectly caught up in? It's mentioned in the NYT article I posted before. Hilariously bizarre. Azealia is crazy it turns out and she got pisd at Grimes and started sharing screenshots of text message with Grimes about Elon on social media. Topics range from the size of Elon's member to weed to Tesla and russians, etc.

https://www.nme.com/news/music/azea...nversations-with-grimes-and-elon-musk-2369975
Azealia eventually apologized but even it's got some crazy. https://www.billboard.com/articles/columns/hip-hop/8472249/azealia-banks-apology-letter-elon-musk
As you can see this made some major news outlet rounds, even Newsweek, lol. It also affected Tesla stock prices, etc. Crazy pop culture stuff affecting the real world. It reminds me why I'm careful with my communications. I don't do social media (incl no facebook) and try to be sensitive with what I text to others. Anyway, thought I'd share that funny Elon story.

Cheers

Any golf fans here? Tiger Woods won again on the PGA tour today. First time in about 5 years. Big sports news. It was a crazy gallery at the end captured on camera. Great for golf.

I'm sure Hank Haney was giving his TV the finger.
