Ontario launched its buck-a-beer plan Tuesday by offering “non-financial incentives” to brewers who sell their beer for $1.

Premier*Doug Ford*said participating businesses will be offered prime spots in Liquor Control Board of Ontario stores, or advertising in flyers or inserts, among other possible rewards.

The Progressive Conservative plan will lower the minimum price of a bottle or can of beer with an alcohol volume below 5.6 per cent to $1 from $1.25 starting Aug. 27 – a few days before the Labour Day weekend.

Brewers would not be required to charge less, however, and the lower minimum price would not apply to draft beer, nor would it include the bottle deposit.

Are the "Rewards" not be perks that would usually be charged for?

In other words, giving away revenue that will have to be made up for elsewhere.

MAYYYYYYBE the mass produced brands will be able to sell it at that price point (canadian, coors, etc) but anything that's remotely smaller or craft won't be able to look at that.

I don't really drink mass produced ones in general.. might make an exception for some brava once in a while but that's about it. I try to encourage local brewers (well mainly quebec and ontario brewers)

Ok,a 24 of 355ml domestic beer is $40 at the beer store.A growler 1892ml of craft beer is $12.High school (ok grade school)was a long time ago.Somebody the math for me.How does that compare?

Domestic is 213 ml per dollar, craft growler is 157 ml per dollar at those prices and volumes

I'd be happier about a buck a litre for gas.
Typical Politian distraction tactic.

I can't imagine any $1 beer being any good unless you're an alcoholic and crave the alcohol content only; and this just makes it more affordable for those who really should need it the least.

Cheaper beer = higher societal costs.

The current minimum allowed price is 1.25 or $30 a case plus deposit. How many beers (that you would drink...) are sold for that price today? Those are the only ones that have a chance of meeting $1 a beer (since they are at the bottom now). Really I don't care what the min price is as long as the taxes are collected...

Giving away premium shelf space (that was charged for and therefore revenue for the province) for nothing is just a subsidy by another name. Tax payer money, just in another way.

In the end it is just wag the dog. Just like Wynne (right out of her play book BTW) did with Beer and Wine in grocery stores. Every time the heat was on her she would bring it up. Heat was getting to Ford on screwing with the municipal elections and sex ed, boom buck a beer and everyone is distracted.

News article was on last night. The lowest they could find was $1.40/bottle....even with the $1.25 min allowed. All the craft brewers they talked to said they weren't going to change their prices.

Don’t care if the brewers accommodate or not. I’d rather the market set the lowest price instead of the government.

Still enjoy picking up cheap beer at Costco in Gatineau for camping. Why can’t do that in Ontario?

I agree but at the same time it appears the market may have already decided since it does not look like anyone is currently selling beer for the min price in Ontario, they decided that old price was too low... In reality, set the min taxes per bottle and let them sell it for what they want, let the market decide.

"Buck a Beer" refers to Laker doesn't it? Don't think i would drink that donkey piss if it was free.Well maybe on a beach or golf course in Floriduh.

I think the small Heineken 48 packs are close to $1 can at Costco QC, no?

Due to Ontario beer taxes. Yeah, it's one of those rare times where Quebec has lower taxes than Ontario.

in what world
is free marketing
not a financial incentive??

in the whacko world of Premier Ford
that's where!!

subsidy = competition
Socialism = Capitalism

Really? Beer prices are high on the agenda for Ford Nation? Wow! We might as well have McQuinty back or Wynne. Just stupid. Health care? Other major issues? :help: Its gonna be a long 4 years.
And that stupid grin on his face announcing it? Geez.
