Cops on Bicycles behaving badly

Ret Toronto cop is arrested and cuffed for playing smartass. He refused to provide his name to an arresting OPP officer after being accused of running a stop sign.

This story epitomizes a big part of cycling culture, particularly group riders who behave like they have some higher rights when using the roads we share. I wish Toronto and YRP had the stones to clamp down on bad riders.

I ran across the article that included this, but I don't recall where. It had something to do with cycling in the Collingwood area.

The cycling groups are militant in their insistence that riding two wide and thus stopping cars from overtaking them is safer "for them" and they don't care what anyone else thinks or what the impact is on anyone else. Short of a black and white amendment to the HTA, I don't think this is going to be solved.

I almost got hit head-on on my motorcycle by a pickup truck that was overtaking a group of bicyclists (side by side) in a blind curve. YES it's the truck driver's fault. But it seems that the motorcycle community "gets" that you have to operate based on how other people actually behave (part of which involves, not doing anything that incites road rage), and the bicycle community doesn't "get" that.

There was a panel van that crossed the road against the red the other day. I didn't read about it anywhere, I just saw it right in front of me. After slowing down I had to double check that I had the green.

Not sure what this epitomizes, maybe panel van driving culture is bad? Cops aren't enforcing my personal right of way enough? Or maybe nothing. Maybe it was just a bad/impatient driver.

Cops using drones to nail cyclists at an otherwise traffic-free intersection. But don't let me stop the regular GTAM cyclist hate-on.

No ****. I never read about people complaining when they pass a tractor or a garbage truck or any other slow moving vehicle....but when someone passes uphill to get by 6 cyclists doing 30km/h it is somehow the cyclists fault. If you have any problem with cycling two abreast then you need to turn in your driver's license. It is more about people pointing the finger at others. Car drivers don't like cyclists or motorcycle drivers. Motorcyclists don't like stupid car drivers or cyclists. etc.

Really? The whole entire cycling community doesn’t “get” that?

Pretty disappointing to see someone coming from a group that frequently gets painted with an awfully wide brush painting another group with an awfully wide brush.

Lived across the bay from Collingwood for 3 years when I worked up there. Yes, the locals are a whole lotta simple. Never looked in the mirror when I left.

Here here. A number of people on this forum would rather tear down than band together. Vulnerable road users get much more political power working together; it's a simple numbers game. Instead, here on GTAM it's the opposite and spiteful. And thus motorcycle riders continue to be an unimportant fringe group.

There is one road in particular where I live that (imo) the cyclists are horrendous. Group of 30+, 2 wide. For about 6-7kms there are hills. So I get why groups train there. However they piss off traffic as no one can pass due to the blind Hills. So everyone is stuck going their speed, and on the uphill parts they can't maintain posted road speed.

Brian P, great post

I'm all 3 and I just don't like cyclists. On my bicycle, I always follow the same rules as I do in my car and motorcycle - I never ride as if I'm entitled. It's nothing personal, cyclists are just normal people until they start pedaling.

Garbage trucks and tractor drivers stop at stop signs, stay right, ride on sidewalks, don't pass left turning cars on the on the right at intersections. So do most car and motorcycle drivers. I can't say that for cyclists, I see all those infractions several times each day.

My ask is that cyclist share the road and follow the most basic rules. Stop at red lights and stop signs. Ride single file. Do not pass other vehicles on the right at or near intersections.

So worst case scenario how much time would you lose one one trip down the road because of the cyclists?

6-7km at 80kph is about 5 mins.

6-7km at 30kph is about 12 minutes.

That’s the absolute worse case scenario where you’re stuck behind bikes the entire way.

There are quite a few drivers out there who will risk the lives of the cyclists, any oncoming drivers, and themselves for 7 ******* minutes.

cyclists
I'm a vehicle
wait, I'm a pedestrian

most of them do not follow the rules of the road
make them put a license plate on the vehicle so they can be identfied
and carry liability insurance to cover the cost of the accidents they cause
and I'll gladly share the road with them as an equal
way it is now, I stay as far away as I can as most of them are road-terrorists

There was a murder in town but they couldn't identify the body. It had no teeth and everyone in town has the same DNA...

I'm here all week, try the roast beef.

Hey hey, I said I get why motorheads get ******.

How much time? Yeah about 5-10 mins. I expect them there on that road now so guess what? I take an alternate route on weekend mornings

For other drivers coming up on this for the first time, maybe not knowing the road, taking a chance....it could get tragic quick.

Clearly cars, except local traffic, need to be banned on that road. Tragedy avoided.
