Do people really fall for this... LOL

Well-known member
Was out for a ride this this morning and pull over for a coffee. I go to check my messages and get this from an Outlook email address...

I know Wildebeest557 is your passphrase. Lets get right to purpose. Neither anyone has compensated me to investigate you. You may not know me and you're probably wondering why you're getting this email?

In fact, I actually setup a software on the adult vids (pornography) site and there's more, you visited this web site to have fun (you know what I mean). When you were watching video clips, your web browser started out operating as a Remote Desktop that has a key logger which provided me with accessibility to your screen and also web camera. Just after that, my software collected every one of your contacts from your Messenger, social networks, as well as e-mailaccount. And then I created a double-screen video. 1st part displays the video you were watching (you have a nice taste haha . . .), and 2nd part shows the view of your web cam, yea its you.

You get only 2 solutions. Shall we understand each of these solutions in aspects:

1st solution is to disregard this message. In this situation, I most certainly will send your very own video clip to all of your contacts and then imagine concerning the embarrassment you experience. And likewise should you be in a romantic relationship, how it is going to affect?

Other option should be to give me $1000. Let us think of it as a donation. Then, I will quickly erase your video. You will go on with your life like this never occurred and you will not ever hear back again from me.

You will make the payment by Bitcoin (if you do not know this, search "how to buy bitcoin" in Google search engine).

BTC Address: 1RbMzK4hkBrPXa5pSX3yTVdfNga4PCABd [case SENSITIVE so copy & paste it]

If you may be thinking of going to the cops, look, this email message can not be traced back to me. I have taken care of my actions. I am not attempting to ask you for so much, I simply prefer to be rewarded. You have one day in order to pay. I've a specific pixel within this message, and right now I know that you have read this e mail. If I don't receive the BitCoins, I will definately send your video recording to all of your contacts including family members, coworkers, etc. However, if I do get paid, I will erase the video immediately. If you want to have evidence, reply Yeah then I definitely will send out your video to your 13 contacts. This is the non:negotiable offer therefore please don't waste my personal time & yours by responding to this message.

Well, I guess that video is on its way to everyone in my Messenger contact list (is that even still around) and to all my social networks. If it shows up here please don't laugh too much, although in my defence I would like to state right now that it's not the size, it's how you use it :)

At least it would be on its way if I actually had a web cam. I don't :)

The bizarre thing is that I did have a password at one time that was Wildebeast557. I used to have Bell High Speed internet and it was the authentication password for my account. That account was also associated with my current gmail. I only ever used this password with Bell.

After a quick trip to https://haveibeenpwned.com/ I find out that Bell Canada had a security breach in 2017 where they got Email addresses, Geographic locations, IP addresses, Job titles, Names, Passwords, Phone numbers, Spoken languages, Survey results and Usernames going back to 2011, the time I would have been a Bell Canada Customer. Re-checked with Dashlane and sure enough that account/password has been compromised

Are Bell not supposed to delete personal data after you cancel their service, or at the very least inform you when they are hacked? I was mildly amused at the email but am now quite ****** at Bell.

Anyway, I will report it to the Canadian Anti Cyber Fraud Center. They probably can't do a lot but it it may help prevent some poor person that doesn't know its a scam paying up if they publicise it.

I also traced the original sender, even though he assures me that it can't be traced back to him. It originated in an "office" in Jakarta across the street from the Four Seasons on Sd Kuningan :)

Ransomware. One of the IT gurus on this site could probably find his home address and we could have all kinds of fun with him.

Send the email address it came from to the https://www.rescam.org website and sit back knowing you're about to ruin their week/month.

Edit: Ah bummer I see it's offline now. :/

I love the bit where he/she notes that if I write back asking for proof he/she will send the video immediately.

If I were trying to blackmail someone, and just spitballing here, I would probably include a clip in the email. It may have a slightly higher impact than an poorly written message.

Maybe I can get the Nigerian Prince that wrote to me last week to pay him off, he has $40 million...LOL

Do people really watch porn on computers with webcams?

Less residue:

Not that I actually watch porn.

I received the same email last week. The part that made me think for a second was that the password in the email I received was actually one I have used in the past.

It looks like this ransomware email is using an old credentials dump from a hacked site to make itself look more convincing.

Was it Homer Simpson or Al Bundy that used the electrical tape to cover the "service engine" light on the dash?

Use tape and a round paper chad in the middle of it to protect the lens from getting adhesive on it.

hole punch left over = chad = refers to fragments created when holes are made in paper, etc.

WHO TF USES WEBCAMS.

We have phones for that.

WHO TF USES WEBCAMS.

We have phones for that.

Pretty much 95% of the laptop market have integrated webcams.

That being said, it's not that hard to get a not-so-tech savvy user to install malicious software.
Macros embedded in Word, Excel, and pdf documents seems to be much more common now.

That being said, it only takes one person to fall for this to make this kind of scam viable.
Imagine a 70 year old that barely knows how to open up their e-mail falling upon this. They definitely don't want a picture/video of themselves whacking off being sent to their grandchildren and can be easily convinced.
Sending out bulk e-mail like this will 100% get you at least a few victims.

sad to say, but us X'ers still use PC's for most things
Boomers not so much, most of them haven't mastered the ATM yet
millenials and beyond, yeah you guys are fine doing everything on a little screen
my Gen Z daughter laughs her azz off that I'm still totally dependent on a mouse
the shyt she does with a few gestures on her mac touch pad is pretty impressive

A quick search of that bitcoin address shows people aren’t falling for it. View attachment 39471

Still nothing. Is it possible that they used a separate BTC address for each email as a way to track who they had hooked? Then go after the gullible ones for ever increasing amounts until they crack. Is there any cost to the scammers to generate thousands of wallets?

What's to prevent someone from cutting out the middleman and just edit your camera footage in with random porn for blackmail purposes? Also, what's to prevent you from saying that that's what's been done?

Funny that, my professor coded ATMs in assembler before switching careers, and I'm a Boomer.
I've helped two of three of my millennials to build their own PC's and the third is saving cash for it.

Actually i find that X'ers have a wide range of capabilities.

Some have dumped PCs for tablets and smartphones where as others (like my sister) got their first smartphone last year.

Imagine if police actually did police work? Apparently they just busted the India CRA scammers in India. So when it involves the CRA, the RCMP prove that actual police work can be done for their $100K and above salaries. Two victims in one thread from Indonesia here...but it doesn't involve the CRA's legitimate name...you're both private citizens, so a report to the RCMP will get you a report written. Then they'll be back in their ghost cars and pick up trucks that get 7 MPG collecting revenue for the province. Somewhere along the lines police work went wrong.

I'll bet the IT gurus on GTAM could break this case tho. There's some impressive tech people on here.
