Hit to H-D by India because of Trump's trade war

More bad news, in today's Washington Post:

“If Trump’s trade policies are leading an iconic company like Harley-Davidson to move production out of the United States, then who exactly is benefiting?”

“This will pose a real challenge to the president’s core claim that his policies will lead companies to build more things in the U.S.”

Europe represents Harley’s No. 2 market, after the United States, with sales last year approaching 40,000 units. Shifting production to its non-U. S. plants will require additional investment overseas and is expected to take nine to 18 months, Harley said.

Today’s announcement is among the first signs that Trump’s use of tariffs, which he has promoted as a way to boost employment in the steel and aluminum industries, is hurting other American businesses. Harley’s motorcycles division employs about 5,200 workers. The company provided no details of the number of jobs that would be lost as a result of the production change. A company spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

I'm hoping moving to thailand, and non unionized plants will make them affordable

One doesn't build a factory overnight and there will be negotiations over content. By the time the factory is built the rules could have changed. Trump's goal is to destabilize every aspect of world relations.

this is suggesting continuity of thought
like as in, planning...I think you're giving too much credit
disaster control on a day to day basis is the MO

H-D already has a plant in (I think) Thailand. So do plenty of other manufacturers.

H-D doesn't necessarily need to build a new plant ... they just need to transfer assembly capacity for the rest of the world to an existing plant that is outside Trumplandia and sort out trade between countries that aren't operated by Trump.

Motorcycles are much less complex than cars ... there's not much to the assembly line, it's mostly manual assembly. Parts are already brought in from the rest of the world ... they just need to be diverted to the other plant, and perhaps ship over some tools and fixtures for dealing with the parts that they don't already have.

"You don't want to buy our stuff? Fine. We won't buy yours."

HD just closed an assembly plant in the US. They'll move the assembly line to India where the labour costs are lower.
This is Harley's dream come true.

Trump has a very short attention scan. In spite of this he has spend about 10 - 20 hours in total (a huge big amount of time in his very busy schedule dedicated to eating cheese burgers and watching Fox News) over the past 18 months researching and absorbing the complexities of world trade, currency, tariffs and other nuances of international finance. Needless to say, given his superior intellect he now has the best, biggest knowledge of trade in the world and that is why he has started an easy to win global trade war. His 6 bankruptcies have fully prepared him to to pander to strongmen and dictators while screwing over allies that had stood with and by the US for over 70 years since the end of WW2.

I also predict the poor desperate people of the Rust Belt that have given their souls to Trump and tipped the election to provide him with the Electoral votes he needed in the hope he will resurrect US manufacturing to levels not seen since the mid seventies......... will once again be completely screwed over and virtually none of then will ever be employed in any manufacturing job paying anything over the local minimum wage with zero benefits and no pension.

Most logical thinkers / sane people grasp and understand the laws of unintended consequences.

Trump does not seem to be amongst that percentage of people.

Many of those in his government seem to understand it however, and those same representatives from many states are now (or soon will) start to feel the pain as a result of these unintended consequences.

Question is...how many will stand up to Trump, and will enough eventually do so collectively in order to pass some sort of legislation (clearly, against his will) invalidating/ending this trade war?

The republicans wont say a word. Their entire base voted for trump.

He's been breaking laws and doing shady **** since before the election, and not one squeak.

The only guy who has openly opposed him gets humiliated on a regular basis and is a war hero(McCain)

I feel bad for harley

Had to laugh at this mornings news. Squarely on the “We had no f’ing idea we voted for that” front.

Republican tax law hits churches

https://www.politico.com/story/2018/06/26/republican-tax-law-churches-employees-670362

Many organizations are stunned to learn of the tax — part of a broader Republican effort to strip the code of tax breaks for employee benefits like parking and meals — and say it will be a significant financial and administrative burden.

It also means political peril for lawmakers, many of whom were surely unaware of the provision when they approved the tax plan. Churches’ tax-exempt status, in particular, has long been considered sacrosanct and Republicans are relying on the faithful to back them in the November elections.

More laws of unintended consequences - when your party rushes through an ill planned, uncosted, billion page document that you couldn’t ever possibly read (even if you wanted to) before you were forced to vote on it can there might very well have been crap in there that may cost you your job.

Well he reversed the separating refugee children from their parents....so there's some hope.

Despite probably a huge majority of HD’s USA customers being republicans... I’m sure there will be much mud slinging and claims to swear off the brand, but when it’s all said and done they will quietly do nothing of the sort, continuing to buy $100 T-shirts, and the bikes.

Because Harley.

And because hypocrites.

Trump will spin it that it's the EU playing dirty
those inside the bubble will not know any different
there will be outrage, they'll stop buying wine and cheese
a few may buy Indians, buy they will not abandon HD en masse
